    Oop's

Was doing my range cleaning duties when an elderly gentleman showed up to shoot a couple of rifles. Had a .270 Win and 7mm Rem Mag, both bolt action. He seemed a little confused as to which rifle he was shooting while grabbing a box of bullets. He takes a shot at 100 yds and it's 4" high and 2" left. Then the shell wouldn't extract and he asked me if I had a brass rod, which I did. This is the piece of brass that came out. Turned out he put a .270 Win in the 7mm Rem Mag. Now here's the even better part of the story. He then takes 5 more shots with the correct ammo and they're all in the same group. I would have expected the .270 diameter bullet to be wild, but no, it was right in there with the rest of them. This piece of brass goes in to the example of "what can happen" file.

That’s not the way you are supposed to fire form brass.

I originally thought that maybe the shoulder locations were similar to allow the firing pin to reach primer. But they are nowhere close. So my guess is that the rim was in the extractor to hold it against bolt face.

My Dad did that exact thing once. Cartridge case came right out, split all the way down.
Of course it was My fault.

Things like that can dry your eye or worse. If you can't read the cartridge name on the barrel, seek help....

As a volunteer RSO at the local range I witnessed the same thing (.270 fired in 7 mag). The shooter did have safety glasses on and was very fortunate that he did as he was bleeding from brass or powder gas impacting his face. He opened the bolt of the rifle and said “I fired a .270 in the 7 mm”and then packed up and left the range. He had simply gotten the wrong box of ammunition out of his truck and didn’t check to see which rifle he was firing.

That is one of the reasons .223 and .300 Blackout never go to the range with me at the same time.
