Death to every foe and traitor and hurrah, my boys, for freedom !
Get a 'used 'non collector' Savage 99 308, send it for rebore to 358. Replace 308 carrier with 358 carrier or modify 308 carrier (careful Dremel work), good to go.
You can go to website http://www.35caliber.com and check it out , but you have to call him , leave a message as he usually does not answer and he will call you back .
two years ago, i spent $115 on the dies(ch4d), while expensive(i do it on a disability paycheck), i don't consider it so. the most expensive dies i bought were the redding 20 vartarg dies at around $220+(i bought them about 10 years or so ago).
you can use old 30-30 brass that has already been fired(gave it to my dad) or you can go to starline and buy new 30-30 brass, like i did.
a 38-55 win is a good lever action cartridge, but i would love a single shot rifle.

True. Lots of people have done it, as well as rechambering .35 Remington 336s to .356. And once it's done, you can use .358 brass if you prefer.
Another positive shout out for JES Reboring. I bought a Zastava M70 bolt action in 30-06 (Mauser action) with a 24 inch barrel for $329. Already have a couple of 30-06's so I sent it to him for reoring into 338-06. Cost was $250, turn around was about 2 weeks and I could'nt be more pleased. Put a new Bell and Carlso stock on it, cleaned it up and mounted a scope and worked up a load that will shoot 225 Partitions into 3/4 inch. Great company to deal with. BTW I looked at the bore before and after reboring with my borescope. Before it was pretty rough with some rust, after all rust gone and nice and smooth finish.
A couple years ago, I sent him a Marlin XS7 in .243 to be rebored to .358 Win. I was concerned as to how clean the the new caliber stamping would look. It turned out great! He put x's over the .243 and put "358 WIN" in a conspicuous spot on the barrel near the receiver. Very nice! About 2 1/2 weeks turnaround time. Since there are limited offerings in the .358, it is a great and affordable way to get a unique gun in that chambering.
Curious, did the 660 ever have the barrel floated? I have my dad's old 700 in .30-06, and that rifle hated me - until I floated it. Now it's an X-ring killer!
Yes I know. I once owned a Savage 99 in .358 Win. Bought it used and could never get smaller than 3-4" groups from it. Got rid if it but have not lost the ,358 Win bug. I found a set of loading dies on Midway and they are now here. Was looking today to see if anyone makes a boolit mould for something heavier than 200 grains. Doesn't look like it but I have a few moulds for 200 grainers. Some with GC some without. The 200 grain Lee sometimes gives me three shot groups at 100 yds down around an inch to an inch and a half. That is if I weigh the boolits and use only the ones within 1 grain weight and the powder charge measured to 1/10 grain. That is my Henry single shot in .357 MAX.. I took the testing scope off it the other day as well as the bipod. Put a peep on it. That will make the rifle handier.
Fun fun fun 'til her daddy takes her T-Bird away.

Another vote for JES. He rebored a thoroughly rusted corroded 30-06 BAR Browning auto when I could'nt get anybody else to touch it. They claimed the high chrome content of the Browning steel was to hard to re-rifle. It did'nt seem to bother JES and the rifle shoots better than ever now. His work speaks for its self.
IT AINT what ya shoot--its how ya shoot it. NONE of us are as smart as ALL of us!
Haven't seen the rifle back yet from Jess. In the mean time my loading dies are here and I found some brass at Starling. On its way. I once had a .358 Win. in a 99 Savage so have a bit of old data and three boxes of loads based upon LS brass. A box of each 180 grain, 200 grain, and 250 grain J's. I also found a couple boxes of 200 grain J's at Natches. I think the 200 grainers will be my focus - both J's and cast boolits. I am hoping this will be a nice rifle. Maybe get some use out of it for a change.
Jim
I have a Remington 600 thats factory chambered in 243. I would think the pencil barrel on it would be to thin to be rechambered to .358.
Mic the muzzle and then give JES a call. He will tell you if you have enough "meat" left after the rebore. He told me what he needed on the opposing sides of the bore but I can;t remember so I will not try to venture a guess.

i "think" (but don't count on it) thats its around .200" inches above bore size. i'd call jesse.

Was just curious. I like the 243 chambering for a walking predator gun. Its all original and pristine. If it was Bubba 'd I'd consider it.
225 grain jacketed might offer the best performance depending on the game being pursued. Should give flatter trajectory than 250's and more terminal energy than 200's. Maybe spend an hour or 2 comparing ballistics charts. Of course the only reason to use jacketed bullets is for hunting game but 250 grain cast would be good for hogs.
Spell check doesn't work in Chrome, so if something is spelled wrong, it's just a typo that I missed.
Barrel arrived today from JES. Haven't unpacked it yet. Just got home from work. Brass showed up yesterday from Starline. I have a few days off so will see what I can learn and make a report. If it is as good as everyone says it will be I will be a happy man. I think this will be primarily a cast boolit rifle. We'll see. Don't have any intention of hunting bears or elk. Maybe no hunting at all. I like fooling in the reloading shop.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Should I gas check and lube-size or powder coat? I can do either. Want to keep velocities to about 2K fps. Am thinking of casting of COWW.
Jim
COWW will work either lubed or pc'd. .35 Remington data will get you 2000 fps with a 200 gr cast. My Jes/Remington 700 liked the RCBS 200gr FP really well with Unique on the low side and RE15 and 3031 on the high side. I miss it but it went to a member here so it has a good home! My next one will be fed Lee's version of the same bullet. We like pics when you get a chance!

My avatar is a 3 shot group using a group buy 200 grain HP and 40 grains of varget out of my 336 chambered in 35 Rem. It’s velocity average is 2078 FPS. It’s a deer hammer. Id trade you some cast HP for jacked .358 to try if you want.
