Sent a rifle to JES today

I have a Remington 660 that I have had since I was 19 years old. It started life as a 6mm Remington. Living in Alaska I thought I should make it more powerful so I had a local gunsmith rebarrel it to .308 Win.. It never shot well so it lay in the safe for years. I wrote a letter to Jess and he replied. Came a couple days ago. I wanted it rebored to .358 Win.. He said send it with a money order for $250.00. I did that this morning. I wonder how long it will take before I get it back. My thought is to use it with cast boolits. I don't need another .35 caliber cast boolit gun but my other is a Henry single shot in .357 MAX.. The rifle has a new bolt handle and a steel floor plate. I have been reworking the stock like I did with the Marlin stock. It's surprising how well a little light sanding and some spray urethane (Minwax Helmsman) makes the stocks look. Not perfect but 80% better.

Best of luck to you on this new venture. I wonder what when wrong with the 308?

Jes does fine work. I've had 2 rifles done and both shoot better than the original chamberings. Should be back in a couple or 3 weeks.

Thanks both of you. I have never heard anything but praise for Jess' work. A quesstion: He hand wrote his return address. It's not very legible. Must be a doctor. Does anyone know what his last name is? As far as I can tell it looks like 'Ocampo'

I dunno. It seems like the blank he used was an inferior one. I am not a gunsmith but I understand that some of them used crappy barrels so they could keep prices down. I am looking forward to trying the rifle in the future.

Yes, very easy to get good performance out of with cast. Can be a real power house if you want it to be.

The last rifle I sent to JES had a 3 week turnaround. He does a great job.

Watch out sending rifles to JES ! Before you know it you will be well pleased and start a procession of rifles.
One day you may find yourself with double digits of them....
And they all shoot great !

I’ve been thinking of sending him $250 again myself, lately. I miss the .358 and that’s the best way to get a great one.
That 660 Remington will be a perfect home for that cartridge.

Could a Marlin 336 in 30-30 be rechambered to .358? I bought the rifle new in 1976 and it's just set in my closet.

    3 thing to think about

30-30 has a different rim diameter so you would need a custom bolt made

the 336 action might not be strong enough & all the feed guides would have to be custom made

tube type mag = very possible primer going off in the mag

So short answer is no it can not be converted

Look for a BLR in 358 win instead
    mag in stead of tube

I'm going to say NO on converting a Marlin Model 336 (of any flavor) to .358 Winchester.

In addition to the aforementioned .35-.30-30, you could go with a .38-55. This would get you away from having to buy custom dies for a wildcat. No matter how sensible the wildcat is, things get expensive fast when you say "custom" or "wildcat."

Can't imagine anybody would need more than a .38-55. In our game, however, need isn't really a factor. I just love the .38-55 JES rebored for me from a .30-30. If I can land a good Marlin 336 or another Win 94, it will be sent to JES for a .35-30 conversion. Do I need it? Well, of course not. I just want it.

Hadn't thought about a 35-30; gonna do some more reading on that one.
