Cast bullet feed through Krag magazine

I had hopes that a Lee 303 bullet would feed through my 1898 Krag's magazine. It doesn't unless I punch the bolt, which I don't want to do. That particular bullet has the strange rounded-taper nose which seems to be common on other Lee bullets.

What true, round-nose lead bullets, in the weight range 165-200 grains) have you cast that will reliably feed through your Krag's magazne?

Lee 309-200-1R feeds fine in my two Krags. It is the current hunting load in my 1898 sporter. The Lyman 311284 at about 210gr depending on alloy was designed for the Krag.

Lyman 314299...my bore is .303” and groove is .314”. Feeds perfectly. Lyman 311291 feeds fine, but is undersize for my bore.

I have used the 311291 and 311284, with good results, in both my Krags. There is a joint where the sideplate is attached to the receiver. The bullet noses have to slide over it. Maybe on your rifle, there is an edge there, catching on the bullets.

Discovered that the problem is not the Lee bullet.

GB, there is indeed an edge where you describe, but I don't believe that's the problem, as the nose of the bullet clears that edge with no hangup.

Looking into this and will report back when I find the problem.

Thanks to all for your posts.

Make a d reamer and true the Lee Mould up to a true round nose. Mine weighs in at 190 greains and feeds perfect. Mostly I think they just need a little more length as the original bullet was 220 grains.

Where is it hanging up? When I had a Krag also used the 311291 and 311284, both fed without issue.

Good question Rich. See new thread, "Springfield Krag won't feed from magazine." . The problem isn't the bullet.
