one 91 down, one 91 to go

this is my youngest son's X-mas present, a 1891(1893) argentine mauser cavalry rifle that is sporterized.

    before

    after

i citristriped the stock(original but cut) . there was split in the forend. it needed four wooden dowels, some wood glue and wooden handscrew clamps to do it. i steamed the stock(iron steamer) 4 or 5 times to take the dings and scratches out, but there are some that were deeply scratches. i then sanded 220,340 and 400 grit. i then put bentleys dark oil wood filler and when it dried, then 400gr and then bronze wooled and cheesecloth it. i put on 6 or 7 coats of minwax antique oil and then a coat of johnson's' paste wax.

in the next week or two, i have another 91 argentine X-mas present (that will be oldest son's) that i'll take a picture or two of it. that girl needed some werk too!!!!!!!

Keep the pictures and progression coming. Always like to see these things spiffied up. And while I don't intend to redo my 1891, I'm might get some ideas for some of my other milsups.
