    .270 Win w/ 170 gr j-word

I have searched and searched but can not find any load data for a .270 Win cartridge and a 170 grain Speer jacketed bullet. Wondering if anybody might have an insight for an elk load with this combination.

I have over a dozen older loading manuals and can’t find nuttin for anything larger than 150 gr.
But if it were me, I have found load data for the 280 Rem. Using a 175 gr. at 3.310 COL being they are very similar capacity wise I would start a little lower and work up for accuracy.
The best loads I see are,
    49.0 grs. I 4350 - 2625 FPS @ 52000 CUP
    51.0 grs. I 4831 - 2650 FPS @ 52000 CUP

Older Barnes data from the early 1980's in the 270 Winchester and 180 grain Barnes bullet. Using IMR4350 starting at 45.0 grains to a maximum of 50.0 grains at 2670 fps. Second load is H-4831 starting at 51 grains to a maximum of 55.5 grains for 2725 fps. The Speer 170 grain 270 bullet seems to be listed in the Speer manuals 5 thru 8. If you'd like these and the Barnes sheet can be photo copied and forwarded.

Older spiral bound Lyman manual may have it.

Back when I had a Rem. 700 in .270 and leaned toward the heavier bullets,
it just loved IMR 4350 at around 90% of the max listed loads.

I tried a few others in my search for perfection, but always came back to 4350.

True, Speer Number 7 page 184, .270 Win loads 170 grain jacketed round nose, using standard large rifle primers except as noted:

    H570 - min 61.0 grain - 63.0 - max 65.0
    4831 - min 52.0 grain - 54.0 - max 56.0
    H450 - min 50.0 grain - 52.0 - max 54.0 - use CCI 250 magnum rifle primer (all)
    4350 - min 48.0 grain - 50.0 - max 52.0
    4320 - min 42.0 grain - 44.0 - max 46.0
    4895 - min 42.0 grain - 44.0 - max 46.0
    4064 - min 41.0 grain - 43.0 - max 45.0
    HV-2 - min 37.0 grain - 39.0 - max 41.0

Plus, Speer number 5, page 156 also gives:
    5010 - min 61 grain - 63 - max 65
    from page 154:
"The new SPEER 170 grain round nose bullet adapts this fine cartridge to short range shooting in heavy brush. Fifty-six grains of #4831 drives this bullet 2803 feet per second, making it a very potent load indeed."

Barnes Bullets Reloading Manual Number One page 52; .270 Winchester - 180 grain bullet:
    IMR 4350 - 46.0 grain - max 50.0
    IMR 4831 - 47.0 grain - max 51.0
    IMR 7828 - 50.0 grain - max 54.0
    H414 - 44.0 grain - max 48.5
    H4831 - 51.0 grain - max 55.0
    RL 19 - 49.0 grain - max 53.0
    RL 22 - 49.0 grain - max 53.5

I still have some of those bullets, never shot worth a darn in My 1974 Rem 700. Took Elk with a Nosler 160gr Semi-Spitzer. It was a much more accurate load the Anything with the 170gr Speer "plug".

Wow! This is wonderful to have so many help me out. My old Speer manuals didn't have any info. Thanks all. Will copy this all down and see what I can do.

Speer number nine adds Win 760 43.0 to 47.0 at 2500 fps. And H380 43.0 to 47.0 at 2551 fps. Number 8 adds RL-21 44.0 to 48.0 at 2553 fps. 780-BR 51.0 to55.0 at 2638 fps. N205 53.0 to 57.0 at 2775 fps. And Speer number 6 is the same as number 7 except for all loads the maximum is 2 grains higher across all the powders.
I really worry about typos with my typing so if anything looks wrong it probably is. Again this information can be photo copied and sent.

I have a Lyman reloading manual, 44th edition from 1967. It has loads for 8 powders using a 170 gr jacketed bullet. I'd be glad to photocopy it and send it to you. Send a pm if interested.

I also have the Speer number 9 manual with eight different loads for that bullet. I have three different tests with IMR 4064 powder. 39 grains, 41 grains, and 43 grains. I only shot 5 rounds each. Groups were two and half for all three loads. 39 grains was the best with 4 within three quarters of an inch and two touching each other. I had one flier that stretched the group to two and half inches. This was all done a 100 yards also. I used 4064 only because it was the only powder I had that was listed. Finally got to test them after our new range opened up.

Ive got about 150 of the "fenceposts" left....both the old winchester model 70 and my new HOWA 1500 love them...the deer they hit dont love them so much at all.....
my Nick Harvey #3 manual has load data in the text on them using Hodgdon powder and I use that and the ADI equivilent AR 2213sc so it was easy to get a load sorted WARNING..... you will need to back out your seating die itself as well as the top/inner bit and then gradually screw them back down seating deeper untill you reach desired overall length.you simply will not fit projectile into mouth of case if dies are set up normally.
these awesome old projectiles hit like hammer of thor they are similar to a 180grn in the mighty 30/06 highly recommended .

right...so my rifle like it hot...Im using 54grns of H4831/AR2213sc which SHOULD give me 2500-2600fps

NH has this to say...."most handloaders who are handloaders and want a really powerful load for the brush, turn to the 170 grn speer driven at 2800fps by 56grns of h4831 this is ideal for big asiatic deer like rusaand samber, its a load that out preforms the old 180grn 30//06 by a considerable margin, and I wouldnt feel too badly using it on dangerous game in thick cover"

a bold statement indeed..... they are good....but not sure if I would be happy on one of your fellas big bears unless it was at least 100 yards away allowing lots of good shots on target before it reached me...that said I cannot think of a .277 projectile that would give me more confidence in same senario including solid copper jobbies.

I have a small handful of those 170gr Speers. I got cloverleaf groups with 53grs of Win 780. They hammered every deer and hog I shot. This was a Rem 700 '72 vintage. Loved that old gun.
