1. Lyman 311466 Four cavity, from the black-and-white box era. A Guy Loverin design that has proven itself in different 30 caliber rifles. Six-groove, gas check, tapered design. Using a caliper, I measure diameters at the mold parting line to be 0.314 at the back drive band and 0.3045 at the front band. Nominal bullet weight, according to old catalogs, is 152 grains.
The replaced pivot screw (ordinary hardware store variety bolt) swings much better than the original stock affair from Lyman with that twisted lock washer. This mold comes with its original box but no handles. I have not cast in this mold, and I don’t believe it has seen much use. Price: $135.
2. Lyman Ideal 358318. This is from the Ideal era of Lyman production. The design is a two-cavity, two-groove gas check bullet of 245 grains nominal weight. NOT a bore-riding design. My understanding is the bullet was intended for the .358 Winchester and .35 Whelen.
Don’t confuse this mold with the Lyman 358315, which casts a shorter, 200-grain bullet most commonly loaded for the .35 Remington.
As can be seen in the photos, someone scratched vent lines from the bullet nose. Has seen very little use. I have cast with this mold – drops soft lead nicely around 0.360-0.361 on the drive bands. No handles. Price: $135.
