    Third Model Dragoon

Testing some Third Model Dragoon loadings.
Boolits are of course being cast from soft lead.
Sizing diameter is 0.450" due to the chambers being 0.451" (and 1.47" deep).

Firm seating of the boolits on the powder charges provides metal to metal sealing.
These charges of FFg are close to taking up all the available volume within the chambers that's left over from the lengths of the boolits, the boolits' noses being a little below the front plane of the cylinder.
    #452389 (195 gr.), 40 grains FFg, 762FPS.
#454613 (plain base adjusted to 230 Gr.), 35 grains FFg, 709FPS.

Ideal #45266 is a bevel base design that I've found to work well in the Walkers and Dragoons. That bevel base makes for nice loading and the nose generally fits the loading rams. Never bothered to chrono it but maybe this time.

if you can find one, a Lyman 45468 is a hollow base that will give you more powder space.

That's interesting. And the accuracy is?

Had one in the fun box for a long time and I've just never used it.
Reckon that's another one I need to try out!

Thanks for the post Good Cheer - interesting! I bought a new 3rd model a couple of months but won't get to shoot it until I get back to AZ for the winter. Have you found one shoots better than another"

I have a Walker as well - but I found it a bit heave to holster carry on the belt - decided a nice 3rd model would be shorter and lighter but am now thinking a shoulder holster so I can carry it under my jacket. Maybe I should have bought two to carry so I'd be counter balanced????

The dragoons surely are a passel of iron. Haven't done any accuracy tests with this piece yet. In a 2nd model Uberti I used to have and in a Uberti Walker, they both liked #45266.
There's another mold I ran across

that I think is a match for the Uberti chambers.
