    .40 S&W 200 gr. FP loads

Have an MP mold I received from a gentleman on here that casts both HP and FP’s. HP is at 180’ish and HP at 195’ish. I know around 200 gr. Is pushing case volume for the .40 but was wondering if anyone had some powder suggestions. Also, after purchasing many once fired cases a while back I discovered some that were a few thousands short of the .845 trim to length (like .840+”).

EDIT: my bad, I found a 200 gr “RCBS#10mm-SWC” section in Lyman 4th Cast Bullet Handbook. Still listed under 40 S&W. Any other ideas are welcome.

I use a 200 grain FP in a Glock M27 that chrono's at 930 fps with Longshot. My bullets seats no more deeply than the 200 gr XTP. I load it to 1.125 inches with WSP and have at it. I use the Hodgdons data for the 200 grain XTP. Start low and work up as any safety minded person would do.
Watch pressure signs on the cases, not the primers, and you should be okay.
Longshot is hard to beat in my belief.

Similarly to 44mag#1, I load a 203 gr powder coated LBT WFN over Longshot in the 40 S&W. Close to 1000 fps from a G23. The WFN is relatively short, so it has less intrusion into the case than a JHP. In my view, max velocity 40 S&W ammo begins and ends with Longshot.

I worry not at all about cases that are a touch short.

Looks like a lb of Longshot going on list! Over 20 different powders but no LS

I have loaded them with Solo 1000, which is no longer available but is pretty fast. IIRC they were in the 800 FPS range. I didn't find them any softer shooting than 180s so I went back to 180s for my use. I would think that any medium burn speed powder would be the safest.

Wow, never heard of SOLO, makes me wonder how many different powders are out there. The solid FP's I wanna load are around 193-194 gr's but are .005 shorter than HP's (.613 as opposed to .618). The Bullseye I loaded the HP's up with-even with 5.0 grains max only occupied about 50% case. I was wondering if could tweak down that powder for solids. Not looking for a lot of velocity just accuracy.

There are many powders that will work. The medium burn speeds will be suitable for range fodder. E.g. Unique, WSF, Silhouette, No. 5. Many of those have load data in the Lyman #4 manual. Western Powders has also listed a number of cast bullet loads for their various powders.

So I took and loaded the FN solid heavy hitters with 4.6-5.0 Unique. I'll post results (which I know will be old news). I also have an "Alpha Wolf" aftermarket barrel gonna test with also. Paranoia hit me in the middle of the night last night after remembering the dreaded "Glock bulge" so I plunked every loaded round into chamber of Wolf barrel and they all dropped in fine. If they went in it, I know they fall into Glock. Yea there's the GRX dies, the Lee "Bulge Buster", the old trick with the Lee FC die (running rounds through without sleeve/adjuster.... There will always be SOMETHING a reloader can find an excuse to buy!

I may be behind the times but I just use a set of Hornady dies for both my Glock M27 and my Springfield XDm in 40 S&W.
    Am I behind?

No. You're good. The "bulge" thing is way over emphasized in my opinion. I own a G-Rx die but find it totally unnecessary, and virtually all my 40 brass is range pickups. Loaded 40 ammo for a G23, XD and 1911. All kerplunk the gauge and chambers using standard RCBS dies.

The old bulge problem really died with the mid term Gen3, 4 and 5's. I use 40's in an M&P, Tanfoglio and now a GP-100 and have not run into the six o;clock Glock bulge in the last 10 years. I gues nobody up here shoots Gen 1 and 2 Glock 40 cal guns.

First, I never trim service caliber cases.
I have run some 200gr LFP in my xdm 40 but at 40 minor vel, about 700fps using WST, works fine but accuracy was just so-so.

    .40 S&W 200 gr. FP loads

Well didn’t go so good until I got to the 190+ gr. RFN. 4.9 gr’s of Unique at 1.135” COAL at 10 yards (10 shot groups) was even remotely close. Gonna load same everything and shoot through Alpha Wolfe barrel soon. Interestingly enough, the last bullseye at bottom right in one of the pics was expensive Winchester defense ammo and shot like crap. FYI I’m not a bad shooter as my S&W .357 will shoot 1” groups off hand at this short distance!

(Deleted other pics- too embarrassing lol)
