Anyone using any % crayon in their home made bullet lube?

I know some of us cast and perhaps make our own lubes. I also know there are dozens or hundreds of bullet lube recipes out there. Many of them have at least some percent wax ( candle, canning, etc ).

Is anyone using crayons as a wax and or coloring?

The wife is a school teacher and today they are prepping classrooms..cleaning up pre school year... I could get a couple 5g buckets of free slightly used crayons I could melt down. They are tossing them.

    Any good?

The basic ingredients contained in Crayola Crayons are paraffin wax and color pigment. The ingredients are the same for all Crayola Crayon colors, with some modifications in special effects crayons.

For a good lube, use 40% paraffin. In you’re case, melt them by color and sell them on the Internet

That's what I was thinking. It's basically tinted paraffin... So I can count them as wax. Wow.. I got lotsa wax now...

    Thanks

Back in the old days, when the kids were little, I had a endless supply of broken crayons.
I made my own lube for 1,000-ish speed handgun loads with them.

It won't work just straight, I had to mix in some motor oil and high temp disc brake grease to get it 'just right'.
It does stink. You might need to rub a little Hoppe's #9 on your upper lip to cover the smell.

Since the kids grew up, I've switched over to 'liberating' some of the wife's fu-fu smelling candles.
The smell is better. However; once a guy at the range asked me if I got my ammo from San Francisco.

I don't use it for Magnum handgun or high speed rifle loads. I can't get away from Lyman's Orange Magic for those.

Here’s what happened using Texas Roadhouse crayons in my latest FWFL. Apparently not all crayons are wax.

It has to smell better the some of the commercially powder coated bullets that smell like burnt electrical insulation. I wonder if I used old French fry oil...

Candle Wax, (unused) toilet ring wax, synthetic 2-stoke oil and crayons for color - makes a decent but smokey lube in a pinch at a very low cost.

Not all crayons are Crayola. That could be why your end product was not as expected. I used crayons only for the coloration, not for the wax content. Used candles made crayons unnecessary having their own color (and scent).

I have used a handful of broken crayons to reduce the oxides back in during smelting. Worked well, some definitely are not wax.

Since I quit lubing, I didn’t need crayons and I had 115 left of the 120 box. I took them to a neighbor that has a young daughter. Yay, she exclaimed, more food for the kid.

I've been using for a bit now.. I love the pigment.. makes it easier to see the lube in the groove.

I use a small piece of green Crayola crayon when making my lube. I only make about 16 ounces at a time, doesn’t take much at all to get a nice green color, I don’t think it’s enough to affect the properties of the lube any.
