Name the two breeds that created this mutt.

Drove to Seattle and visited my daughter and grandkids and got to meet her new puppy. He's six months old and has been raised by them since he was weened. He's very smart, incredibly good with the kids, and loves their cat.

Just a great dog.

The owners said that they knew who the mother and father were, but turns out they were wrong. They told my daughter he would be maybe 50 lbs fully grown, but he is already 60 lbs at 6 months.

My daughter did some investigating around the neighborhood and found out for sure who the actual father is. Both mother and father are pure breeds.

My guess was a Chupacabra and a Dingo. I guessed wrong.

The discoloration on his muzzle is natural markings and not scars, like I originally thought.

So, what's your best guess as to what two breeds created Arlo?

Wow, I have no quess. But he looks pretty cool. Maybe have his DNA checked if you really want to know what he is. Not cheap, but maybe worth it.

There's at least some German Shepherd or closely related breed in there, based on body, head, and muzzle shape. Beyond that, it's pretty hard to say. Dog genes are weird, and combinations can come out in unexpected ways.

These two are sisters from the same litter. You couldn't tell by looking at them.

Nope, my daughter located the father, so she knows exactly what he is. She did an internet search for dogs with that mix and he looks just like them.

Her last dog was a Great Dane/Yellow Lab mix that I ended up adopting when her husband got stationed in Japan. He was a 100 lb dog that I loved dearly until he died at age 13 last year. He was incredibly gentle and lovable with kids and loved to be around all kids. Mu daughter has a knack for picking out and raising great dogs. Her husband is getting out of the Air Force in May, so no chance I will have to adopt Arlo. Made me sad. Told her if any of his six siblings needed to be re-homed, then I would be interested.

I would recommend having a DNA test done. When we adopted our fur baby, we were told she was part black lab and golden retriever. The DNA test she was black lab, husky, great pyrenees, Australian cattle dog, Staffordshire terrier and Australian sheep dog. 25% of her dna was undetermined canine. Best way to describe just think of a longhaired black lab. Anyway, it was fun to know her ancestry.

I would vote father - German (or some similar type) Shepard and mother - Pembroke Welsh Corgi ...
they would be pure bred ...the yellow coloring and ears are from mamma and the size from Daddy .

Another vote would be Golden Lab / German Shepard but no way it would be under 50 pounds...
... the 50 pounds grown is what made me think small yellow with pointy ears = Welsh Corgi ?
From post #6 ... LYD (little yellow dog) could be a Welsh Corgi and your Belgian Shepard ... good call . That sounds like a probable combination !

There could be all different breeds mixed in. Even most pure breeds are not really that pure. If you really think you need to know do a DNA test, otherwise be happy you have a great companion no matter what the mix.

Best dog we ever had was half yellow lab and half malemute. In his prime, he was 115 pounds. Kindhearted, ears stuck out sideways, gently protective, and his tail should have been registered as a deadly wag weapon. Didn't bark much, but when he growled, the house rumbled.

Red Heelers are fairly common around here. My Blue heeler is pure blood and slightly smarter than a box of rocks, bless him !
We were just given a half Chihuahua half Pomeranian (DNA test) pup that the former owner suspected of killing one of her cats. He was framed, I believe. She loves him- but loves her cats more. Gosh,, he came with 100 lbs of food and treats, vet records, crate,, bed,, toys....We like this little dude and our farm cats have already told him to bring it on- and he declined. Who's a smart boy?
