That is sad news. I just talked to him two days before Christmas (PM’s) and he mentioned that his health wasn’t any better. I knew he wasn’t doing all that well but this is the first I’ve heard of him passing. He will be greatly missed.

That's a darn shame. As many older members as we have, we are fortunate we don't loose people more often. My condolences to the family.

That is a shame. The members here are such good people. I wish we all lived in the same town. Did anyone ever meet him in person, maybe shoot with him. I know him from his post but would love to know a little about his life.

Chunkum and I spoke to each other a good many times through emails and PM's. We hunted a lot of the same territory back through the years. We had planned on getting together some day since I had a camp just across the river from him but we just never got around to it. I knew that he wasn't in the best of health for a while but I didn't know that he was in that bad of shape. I've attached a picture of Chunkum. Of course he is the guy holding the .454 revolver. He had killed the hog in the photo with it. Chunkum had a good story to go along with the photo too. The picture was taken in the late 70’s or very early 80’s if I remember correctly. The hunt was on Workmans Bayou just out of Monterey La.

The Chunkum in the picture didn't change much over the years and looks very much like he did the last time I saw him. He had trimmed his beard down to just sorta following the jaw line, but still very similar.

I'm sure he had a tale to go with that hog. He had a boatload of tales about so many events!

That FA .454 (one of two he bought at the same time) was the result of several conversations with Elmer Keith and was Elmer's "answer" to hopping up the .45 Colt. He had bought a M25 in .45 Colt and it just wouldn't stand the loads he was wanting to shoot through it, so the FA .454 was the answer to the "problem". There was an old metal cattle feeder on his "farm" that was riddled with holes from him shooting at 300 yards and more with the .454s.

Chunkum (Jon) had told me the story of buying those two .454's and the reason why he bought them. It was during a time that I was intrested in the .454 myself. I guess that was one of the things that sparked Chunkum to send me that photo. Plus the photo was taken in an area that we both came from and hunted. I think that this is the same .454 as in the picture with Chunkum as this picture came from him too.

Jon's FA .454s, M1917 S&W and M625 all utilized this bullet, if it was sized and loaded right.



I cast this specimen from the NEI mould Jon and GLL (Jerry) both got. If it was to be ordered from NEI, the ".45-255 Jon Campbell" is the proper designation. The weight, in the alloy Jon and I used, is actually closer to 270 gr, but we used a fairly soft alloy of close to 50/50 stick-on to clip-on WWs, with a little additional tin for mould fill.

This is basically the same bullet we're waiting on from a group buy in a Lee 6 cavity.
