Day before yesterday I shot my 44mag rifle (Win 94 AE, 24" bbl.) using a Saeco mold 310gr bullet at 1550 fps. , BHN 10.5. Range 70 yds. Picture insert. The 44 bullet penetrated about 8" into the end of a pine tree I cut down about 3 weeks ago.Retained weight was about 262grs.Attachment 286183Attachment 286184Attachment 286185. Then today, got to thinking how would my 45-70 ( Marlin XLR 24" bbl ) compare with it's 350gr bullet at a hair over 1500 fps ( range scrap BHN 15 ) compare ? Same 70 yd range.picture insert.Attachment 286186Attachment 286187Attachment 286188. Retained weight of 45 bullet, 332grs. Penetration , just slightly over 10". Same tree, just a different section. Not trying to prove any thing, just a visual view for what ever it's worth. I realize the 44 bullet is softer , but that is what I had cast up. Weight makes a difference . Yes I know I powdered coated the bullets in strange colors.
