Do You Use Wads with Hodgdon Triple 777 in Cartridge Ammo?

Ran into an interesting use of Hodgdon Triple Se7en fffg in brass cartridges by Fortunecookie45lc on YouTube.

So what's the skinny on using wads and lube under bullets with black powder and substitutes? Do you use wads? What's your technique for 777 in straight-walled brass cartridges?

He shows how to use 777 (in multiple videos), and how to make wads using a sharpened .45ACP case to punch out very thin cork/paper hybrid wads using cork shelf paper. Con-tac paper at Amazon: https://smile.amazon.com/Tact-Brand-...a9c0027d0&th=1

He proposes putting Crisco as lube between two of these cork/paper wads, ending up with paper facing the bullet's base and the other side's paper facing the powder.

He also talks about using 777 with .44 Mag and even 500 S&W Mag pushing 440-grain Lee slugs.

    Hello Liberty1776,

I use Triple Seven in my front loaders, mainly because it can be purchased locally.
In my Cartridge Conversion Revolvers I've been using Alliant Black MZ.
I first loaded a 44 Colt with 1.9cc Lee Dipper of Goex FFG, which put a little compression on the powder.
Then I tried Black MZ with the same "Bulk Measurement". Seemed to work fine.
Then I read where shooters were using "Reduced Charges" in their revolvers,
so I went with a 20gr by weight charge with a 200gr bullet in my 45 Colt, about a 25% less than full charge.
I put a 3/8" piece of "Biodegradable Packaging Peanut" above the powder charge and seated the bullet.
That's what I have tried, they seem to have plenty of kick. I have not run them through the Chrony as of yet.
I did contact Alliant before I started loading, they did not have a load tested for the 200gr bullet in the 45 Colt, or any loads for the 44 Colt.
They said loads were tested for pressure and were measured by weight, not bulk.
I did this on my own, and anything you try will be the same. I'm not recommending anything here, just saying what I tried.
I would guess that Fortunecookie45 put a wad between the powder & bullet to prevent contamination of his powder.

Yes, the only time I used it was with a 500gr 45-70 bullet shooting 600yds after sighting the rifle at 100yds.
    Both distance groups were MOA

I use a wad in 45 colt with ffg T7. Also in 45-70. No ill effects so far. Maybe pressure building up with the springy ness of the wad? Correct me if I’m wrong!

So he says 3fg is ok. I loaded up a round without a wad to check for pressure. Then I bought some more 2fg. But I’m going to use my 3fg if the test is ok or inconclusive. How much does the hot lead zone say to use? Or does he. Now I’m using two milk carton wads thinner than a felt wad. What you think about using a 500 gr bullet with that T7. How low should I go. 500 grs in a 2fg is doable. But it’s jacketed and a bore rider nose. Fits easily now in my gun. Tried it with black and duplex and with2fg so far. Just got to get to the range. Which I appreciate having really, no funny business.

T-7 shoots better with a wad.
