    Home made express sight

I have been working on a husqvarna 146 that was missing it’s sights when it came to me.
I have grown tired of waiting in the back ordered NECG from midway.
Today I got the wild hair to try making it myself.

I started with some plain cold rolled 1”x1/8” steel strap and some rough measurements. After cutting the base and the leaf I silver soldered the leaf to the base

Next I leveled the top of the leaf side to side and cleaned up the excess silver solder.

After this I set the dovetail width and then the side to side width of the sight and set the center line. The side angles don’t look very even but it’s just the angle of the photo to catch the start of the center line.

Then I set the notch in the back and deepened the center line.

Very nice! Can you go into detail about what type of specific solder and flux you used to join the metals? I'm assuming you're using a regular propane torch? Are you doing this on top of a brick to act as a heat sink?

I ask all these questions cuz I want to do the same thing.

I used Harris #54.452 you can find it on eBay for around $30. I have been using that kit and a hard solder kit for at least 5 years now.

Actually no I did not use a brick even though I have two extras laying around. I use an oxy acetylene torch because I already have the setup I do not recall which tip size I currently have on it over time I have learned to tune heat because of OA welding and bronze brazing. It’s not the best way to run soldering though. I haven’t bought a belt or buckle in many years I carry on all my hand made belts with my hand made buckles as well which I soldered the heel bars into and not one has let go on plain steel nor nickel silver with stainless heel bar.

Make sure everything is clean and your joint is well fitted. There is actually a really good sticky in the gun smithing tips and tricks section.

Not a problem at all we all learn different things and skills different ways. I wish I had a mill here at the house. One day I will get the one my uncle has waiting for me but it’s going to take 3 grown men to move.

Nice work! You might want to get yourself an engine hoist, or rent one. Makes moving mills and lathes so very much easier, even when you're alone.

Have to lift the roof off a shed to get it out or take down the wall. That’s how it was put in.

I've been making my own sights for several years. I cut them from a single piece of steel.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!
