Judging from a news report, that building was a housing complex oriented towards fulfilling the cultural needs of its primary residents, who were Orthodox Jews from Latin America. Given their tight-knit community I don't think they would be very appreciative of a drug-fueled man on the run storing anything in there.

It’s a horrible tragedy, no matter what the cause.

Amen to that. It is a horrible tragedy. Hopefully it was quick. Don't think too many will be found alive, but can always pray that many will be found alive. Kind of reminds me of the OKC bombing, what the front of the building looked like.

I think we all saw it happen in NYC about 20 years ago - twice!

Murdered one day, building collapses the next.... Surrounding buildings look unscathed.
That was at least an 8 or 10 story building. They don’t build high rises on a floating foundation. They drive pilings to bedrock. The same bedrock the surrounding buildings are founded on. Pretty selective sinkhole IMO.
Can’t remember the last time I heard of a building collapsing like that without an earthquake or explosion.
I’ve said it before, I don’t believe in coincidences.
Just hope all his eggs weren’t in one basket.

See on the news that engineers were planning extensive repairs on rusted steel and cracked concrete.......but didnt think it was urgent......The whole area is built on reclaimed beach swamp ,and you can be sure there is lots of salt in the groundwater.

    From that link...
The report also uncovered “abundant cracking” and other faults in concrete columns, beams and walls in the parking garage. Some of the damage was minor, while other columns had exposed and deteriorating rebar.

I think that we've all seen concrete structures with rusted exposed rebar. As rebar rusts, it expands slightly allowing more water to seep into the cracks around the rebar. It is amazing what a salt water environment can do to iron and I expect that cracked concrete as a result of rusted rebar will be the end finding.

I'm not 100% certain but most of the Argentinians that I ever saw visiting the area are catholic, and there's a bunch that go there in summer. that particular neighborhood is very expensive, on the bay side, just due west of where the condos are in Indian creek is where the Trumps bought a single house lot very recently for $30million.
I don't think there is a whole lot of bedrock in that part of Florida that can be reached with a 100' piling. there is lots of coral rock that crumbles pretty easy.

Concrete needs to be dense to prevent salt penetration that will corrode the reinforcing bars. And there needs to be about 3" of concrete over the steel too. Sloppy construction on critical elements could have caused this as well as out of spec material. Looks like columns failed near ground level.

All of Florida is built on an underground aquifer. It covers the whole state.

Anyone look at the type of re-bar? Was it plastic covered? Bare bars do not rust like plastic coated ones do when the covering is penetrated, it traps moisture and salt accelerating rust.

Castillo De San Marcos is the oldest masonry structure in Fla. No concrete, No rebar. Stuff gathered from the surroundings. Built on the Matanzas river and the Atlantic Ocean. They was and still do a bunch of upkeep to keep it in place. Back in the day, upgrade accommodations was hay on the floor for your bed. You spent your day hacking at coquina rock to get some fish stew and bread for supper.

I don't know when the plastic coated rebar came out, but I'd guess it was the plain old school stuff back when it was built.

got to thinking about this collapse last night.......im currently in Miami on a travel contract and I took the company's travel option for housing as in they pick where to put me......I met another traveler that did the same thing, she could see the dust ploom from her apartment/condo, just a few miles away.....the lesson that I learned from this is to hug your loved ones, we have less control over our lives than we think we do, when we are called home......we are called home for our time table of life is not his...........
