    Buckeye Sight Alignment Preference

While my question may not be very important in the scheme of things, I was wondering what the user community feels about sight alignment with a buckeye rear sight and post front sight. I use alignment #2 with my rifle, an Uberti 1866, but I have to admit I am constantly fighting the effort to use alignment #1 and settle the front sight in the lowest portion of the rear sight.

What method do most of you use for your near targets? Alignment 1 or 2?

I think the style of rear sight you show is called "buckhorn".

The "horns" are meant to direct your eye to the notch.

I prefer #2, I think it is more precise.

If you’re looking for precision, #2 is by far the best way to go. This type of sight is meant to be used like the sight on a handgun….just pretend the “ears” aren’t there and use the notch like you would on a pistol (or many rifle sights also).

That is a Simi-buckhorn sight picture. I use a post and bead front sight and lay the bottom of the bead at the top of notch. If not using the bead sight I would use #2 at 100 yards.

    .

While the below display is about using a full buckhorn rear sight, the aiming principle also applies to semi-buckhorn sights.

I have a rifle with full buckhorn sighted in as a peep, as in #1. Front is Patridge Blade and is deadly in the thick stuff on jumped deer. Rifle is 141 Rem 35cal.
