    Howa Carbon Stalker

For now these are unobtanium. I want a .223. Tipping the scales at 4 lbs, 10 oz this would be a great hiking rifle. Also comes in 7.62 x 39 and 6.5 Grendal. But I want the flat shooting and cheap to shoot .223. A CZ American could fit the bill as well and it has a metal single stack magazine which is a plus. Will see how long it takes Howa to fill the pipeline.

Roughly where are you in NC? The Howa looks interesting. The CZ is excellent. Also look at the CZ 527 Carbine. A fella previously posting here was able to get excellent accuracy from the carbine in 7.62x39 using cast.

I love my 16" Ruger American 5.56 that takes AR mags. Wouldn't trade it for anything!

If it shares the trigger guard with the standard Howa Mini Action, you will more than likely find yourself buying one of these.

I have a standard Howa Mini Action in 7.62x39 and it is a great gun except with the factory trigger guard, magazine retention was poor at best. This seems to be a common complaint with the mini actions. Replacing the trigger guard with the above aftermarket unit solved all the problems.

Was in my lgs today and they had a Savage Walking Varminter. Bought it. Has a 1/9 22" barrel with a nice target crown. Accu trigger too. Stock is rigid but plain synthetic. I'll give it a go this weekend. If it is a shooter I will bed it in a walnut Boyd's prairie hunter stock.

I bought one of those a few years ago when it still came with a laminated stock. Now the one like mine is called the lightweight varminter. Mine has a 24 inch barrel with the same twist as yours.
I still have it. It is one of the most accurate rifles I own.
I use BLC2 and a 69grain matchking. One inch groups at 200 yards on a calm day are expected.

@Taz - That is encouraging. I like the 1/9 twist in .223. I expect a .223 to be a solid 1 moa shooter. I've got some 62 and 68 grainers loaded over 2460 so we shall see.

Happiness is a bunch of .223 bolt guns, thrifty and effective (and FUN)!

Ruger has a go wild 16” barrel chambered in 243 with a weight of a hair over 5 pounds that ive been eyeing up. The carbon stalker in 223 gets me excited!

Well, she shoots 1 moa @ 200 yards. The action is mediocre in terms of feeding and the chamber must be rough because it can take a good tug on the bolt to extract. I should have gone with blued steel and walnut......

A little JB bore paste or Flitz on a 358 bore mop attached to a piece of cleaning rod chucked in a drill will clean that chamber up in a jiffy.

@siegel - Yes, was thinking the same thing. And because the mag seats into the stock I may be able to adjust the action slightly to improve feeding.
