    Redfield peep / aperture sight

I'm sorta looking for a Redfield peep / aperture sight to install on a small ring mauser , and am not exactly sure what I need .
In my limited knowledge on this I know I need a right side mounted curved base , but that's about it . I have a buddy tell me that the sight with a M on it fits a Mauser " he thinks" , but didn't know if it was for a small or lg ring . Is that correct ?
Any helpful advice would be appreciated .

    .

Any receiver sight designated as fitting a Mauser 98 will also fit Mauser 91's, 93's & 96's.

Now discontinued Redfield receiver sights are readily available from the likes of E-Bay - just google "Redfield Mauser 98 receiver sight for sale"

AFAIK, the sight bases mount into 2 D&T'd holes in the RH side of the receiver bridge, just behind the bolt handle.

Your friend is correct. Redfield makes two click adjustable receiver sights (70 and 80) and one non click adjustable (102). The model marked "M", on the inside of the base, will fit any Mauser, large or small ring.

$100 + unless you are quite fortunate. But they are worth it. Good luck.

The $ and effort you take to install a good receiver sight is well worth it. Group sizes will dramatically shrink, and receiver sights allow shooters with compromised eyesight to continue shooting without having to use a scope.

I have Redfield Series 70 or 80 sights mounted on a dozen or so M98, M96 or P14/M1917 Enfields, with Lyman, Pacific and Williams receiver sights mounted on a few more. Best may be to look for an "M" marked sight, but all the Redfield sights, plus the Lyman 48 and 57 meant for Mausers, 1903 Springfields, Remington Model 30/1917 or P14 Enfields are interchangeable. Any of these sights can be mounted on the right side of the receiver of any Mauser, Springfield or P14/1917 Enfield or Remington Model 30, no matter what they are marked for (M, S, E or R). I'm not sure why Redfield bothered to mark these at all. In fact, several of my Redfield sights lack any M, S, E or R stamp. The Lyman 57 SME is clearly marked for use on all 3 types. The mounting hole spacing is standard for all of these sights and use two 6-48 screws. The thing to look for is the sight base must mount on the curved radius on the right side of the receiver bridge, just AHEAD/FORWARD of the bolt handle.

If searching on eBay, make sure to determine which side of the moveable windage base (on the elevation slide arm) is threaded to accept a sight aperture disc. This is the "peep/end" you'll be looking through to see your front sight. It must be facing the rear of the rifle with the rear sight mounted on the right side of the receiver. Sights meant for a Winchester Model 54 or 70 mount on the left side of the receiver and cannot be used.

I just mounted a Redfield 70 marked "R" (Remington Model 30) on a M94 Swedish Mauser Carbine without any problems. You'll need to slightly inlet your stock, removing just enough wood to accept the sight base and possibly the elevation slide in the lowest elevation. You may also need to remove the original Mauser rear sight ladder assembly from the base if it interferes with your new receiver sight picture.

I highly prefer Redfield Series 70 sights for use as the sole rear sight. Lyman 57s are OK, but I think the old Redfields are made better. The smaller Redfield Series 80 (quick detachable rear sights) are good to mount as a back up for a scope sighted rifle. The Series 80 elevation slide is easily removed with the press of a button on the side of the mount so there is no interference with the scope. As you search for a suitable aperture sight, if you can't find an affordable Redfield or Lyman, you may find an economic Williams sight that you could use while looking for a "bargain" Redfield.

Nice thing about the older Lyman and Redfield sights were made out of steel. Now having said that Lyman doesn't sell the oldter steel sights anymore and hasn't made them in a bunch of years. All extruded aluminum. Same thing with the newer Redfield sights as well, made from aluminum. Lyman marked their sights for Springfields,Mausers and Enfields SME. Only have one or two steel sights by Redfield, one is for my Remington 513T rifle. Don't know what the other one is for. Their match sights Olympic, International and Palma were all steel. So check first with the seller as to what the sight is made out of. If I had a choice I'd get a Williams Fool proof as I think it's a better sight than the current Lymans. Frank

Pietro showed me one like I was looking for a older Redfield , so I ordered it this morning .
After I get it mounted I'm going to start looking for a new front sight . I'll probably go with a Winchester 70 ramp
Front sight if I can work with the height .
I appreciate you gentlemen sharing your insight and knowledge so freely .

You are the one that got me started on peep Sights again when you passed along to me a older Redfield sight for my trusty 30-30 Sears / Chester .

When my brother helped me get a replacement for my lost 03-A3, he found me a 1903 Springfield with a peep sight. The aperture ring was missing. These folks fixed me up: http://aperturesnmore.com/category.s...?categoryId=12 Think I paid $13 for mine.

    HTH!

Be sure to first calculate the front sight height needed with that receiver sight, as the line-of-sight will be higher than with open/iron barrel sights.

Here's a sight height calculator, but it's for barrel sights, and not a receiver sight:

    https://www.brownells.com/aspx/learn...aspx?lid=13186

Basically, you should first mount the receiver sight, then with it's elevation staff in the middle of it's adjustment range, measure the distance from the middle of the aperture to the bore C/L - plug that height measurement into the calculator's rear sight window (besides the other measurements required by the calculator).

That will result in the TOTAL front sight needed, with or w/o a ramp, so you'll need to do the math to subtract the ramp height from the total to attain the size/height of the sight blade needed for the combo..

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

if I'm not mistaken I think I might have one of the last Lymans made for the Mauser if they don't make them anymore, I'll have to dig it out and check to see exactly what it is, I picked it up when Lyman was clearing out their warehouse. I bought it with idea of remachining it to fit one of my marlins or winchesters.

    Red face

I received the new sight , and am tickled with it . I can hardly wait to go see my shooting buddy Sunday he is a retired machinist that kept his machine shop , guess who is going to be helping me drill and tap the receiver .
