    Deburring the .500 S&W

I just bought myself an S&W 500 and managed to find brass, dies, and a mold however I’ve found that my Lyman outside deburring tool isn’t quite big enough. Can anyone recommend a good outside deburring tool for .50 caliber cartridges? Or even a homemade tool?

While not quit the same angle a 5/8 or 3/4" counter sink can be used with good results, The other plus to these is they normally have a 1/2" shank allowing them to be ran in a drill press.

Another is a mounted grinding point. The stone an be dressed to any angle desired and gives a very fine even cut. Along there lines a mounted carbide point also will do well. Finding them his big is harder. Use a fine cut one.

Old timers used a exacto knife to just peel the sharp edge off. This is done using the sharp edge of he knife like a scraper

I'd imagine this same technique can be used on brass shotshells as well?

Yes they all will work with brass cases, on the counter sinks you may need to "dull" them a little with a stone to stop grabbing and chatter. The counter sinks with the single hole thru work very well

Thanks I'll have to give the counter sink a try, I never even thought of that.

Look in the plumbing section at the hardware store. They have a bigger inside outside deburrer for use on copper tubing.

I stopped trimming any revolver cases long ago. I do measure every now and then but these cases do not stretch as much as bottle neck cases.

I normally don't either but my new Starline brass varies in OAL by up to .025" and I'd like to have them uniform length for the crimp.

Just a heads up, do not ever use "Magtech" (CBC) brass! Primers do not fit anywhere tight enough and I always had issues with them chambering regardless of resizing. Every other brass never gave me problems.

lazy and not enough hi-tech, but a sewing thimble and sandpaper fixed with double-sided tape can work_

I’ve only ever used magtech brass in 9mm and .38 super and never had an issue. Other than that I’ve always used Remington, Winchester, Starline, Hornady, Federal, and Norma.

Interesting idea, I’m sure if I spent a few minutes walking around the hardware store I could figure something out.

    Deburring Tool
Can't go wrong with a tool with this description:

The two metal chamfers are hardened by vacuum heat treatment. Has a hardness of 40 degrees. Can withstand high-intensity strikes without mutating

Don't you hate it when your deburring tool mutates?

I've used a socket stuffed with coarse steel wool for deburring case mouth ODs. I used 1/2" socket mounted on a 1/4" drive adaptor, stuffed steel wool, chucked in my hand drill. I once tried trimming some 44 Magnum brass for some extra heavy loads and deburred with the socket/steel wool. Just push case mouth into steel wool as socket spins. Not the fastest but it worked.

RCBS, Lyman, Hornady and LE Wilson all make 50 cal deburring tools. MidwayUSA lists them. I use one for my 45 calibers, just seem to work better than the 'standards'.

Here's the instructions for making a deburring tool that will work for you: http://varmintal.com/arelo.htm#Neck_Chamfer

I made mine with 3/4" copper pipe caps, stuffed with stainless steel wool. Works like a charm for doing my .45-120 Sharps cases, so it should work for your .500 S&W cases as well.

    Hope this helps.

    carelesslove, here !

When I started loading for the S&W 500, nothing I had worked - too small.

I had to buy another lubersizer, to get .501 dies, for bullet sizing.

Needed a bigger powder funnel, because my UNIFLOW powder measure's screw-in fittings weren't big enough.

And - contrary to what some folks say - the .500 cases stretch a lot on firing, so I have learned to trim them to minimum length and guess what - I needed a much bigger deburring tool.

I went with RCBS and it works for everything .500 and smaller. It is much bigger and heavier and works better, with my huge, arthritic hands.

    Still love the 500.
