    Shotgun Cleaning

Kiddo has a shotgun that accepts shells up to 3-1/2”. I’ve noticed a buildup, inside the barrel, where the taper is and the diameter of the bore brush isn’t large enough to really clean it well.

What do you use to clean that area of the barrel?

Thanks in advance for your time and effort.

In all probability you’re seeing the forcing cone area of the barrel. Due to the way the light hits that area it looks like there’s a build-up. They all look that way. A proper sized brush will clean this area and no matter how much you clean the barrel it’s still going to look the same. If you don’t think this answer is correct, talk to someone who shoots sporting clays or trap and ask them the same question. A lot of those shooters have the forcing cone(s) lengthened on their shotguns for better patterning. I’ve had it done to several of my own. I really don’t think you have an actual build-up in that area if you’re cleaning the barrel with solvent and a brush.

You could get a chamber brush. It is sized to clean the chamber which is larger in diameter than the barrel.

I have used a piece of green scrubbing pad wrapped around a old brass shot shell brush , on a section of cleaning rod , chucked in a drill before in a smooth bore .

Use a solvent that removes plastic, like Hoppes Benchrest solvent. Then use a chamber brush.

Note that plastic will build up in the choke tubes also. Near impossible to see. More a problem for us trap & skeet shooters.
