The new smokeless propellants, jacketed bullets, high intensity loadings and reduced bore sizes was the way of the future, and the large-bores, even loaded with smokeless powders, were, to their way of thinking, headed for the dustbin of history. No forward-thinking shooter back then would have been interested in a “modern rifle” chambered in an obsolete caliber like the .45-70. The 1895 marlin was about the last hoorah in that direction.

GB and most of the other online sources have at anytime guns for .25-20 made by Winchester, Marlin, Remington, Savage just to mention the most common manufacturers but Starline still can't see any profit in making the brass . Lots of .218 Bee rifles around too. They could make .218 brass only and those of us who shoot both could make the .25-20 without loosing cases like you do with .32-20 .

While I'm not arguing your point - Winchester initially offered TWO black powder loadings in their 1895. This was purported to be a hedge against the new fangled smokeless not taking off.

Just got a 1895 in 30 40. Loaded up some 150 FMJs at about 2100 fps.

    Crescent butt plates hurt.

The 405, 30-40, 303 Britsh, 35 Winchester are all similar, rim and head diameter. Peel the rim off and you can get 35 Rem so it should show up when they are ' ALL CAUGHT UP'. Remember the 444 is '06 with the rim left on, common with all the other 308/'06 head diameters.

Actually I owned a Winchester 1895 in 45-70 Govt. and it worked very well. The receiver was made for the 7,62x54R and later rebarrelled. I sold it as I wanted to install a red dot sight on my rifle and bought instead a Winchester 70 in .458 mag.

A 405 Winchester 1895 with a receiver sight makes for a very fast heavy thwaper with 300 grain cast at 2000 fps.... Especially with a large flat nose followed by 3-4 more nestled down in that box magazine.

I like to think of my Browning BLR as a late 20th century rendition of the 95.
    Currently casting and loading: .32 Auto, .380 Auto, .38 Special, 9X19, .357 Magnum, .257 Roberts, 6.5 Creedmoor, .30 WCF, .308 WCF, .45-70.

On the back burner is a full stocked musket build using a .30-06 Browning copy that I picked up a few years ago. Hopefully will look like this. I already have 1866, 1873 and 1876 muskets, the 1895 will be in good company.

Pardon the Hornady version - but it does fit in the carrier of this old gal (also pardon her liver spots, she's been around a while). So it's darn sure possible to do this! But I believe Winchester had moved on by this point.
    Gratuitous accouterment picture of course!

Who was making the brass for Hornady is the good question. Were they actually doing it or was it someone like Starline or PRVI. If it's PRVI, then maybe Graf's could convince them to make a run. I know PRVI made the 7.5x55 Brass, the Hornady, Graf's, and PRVI-all PRVI brass.

There has been a lot of brass that Starline at one point didn't make and there wasn't enough demand. But eventually they started. I forget the minimum order(someone gave me an example one time), but it's a lot, for a new case!!
