Which tang sights do you have?
There are a sort of detent spring in some that will break or lose tension. There should be a fairly distinct soft snap when they are tipped.

these are old lyman tang sights made around 1900. i have never heard or felt a snap when tipped. ja stamped underneath for amarlin 1893
I once had an old tang sight that wouldn't stay put until after I flushed it with carb cleaner and compressed air. I actually didn't know it had locking detents until after cleaning, when the 'clicks' came back.
Warning: I know Judo. If you force me to prove it I'll shoot you.
Depending on which sight you have, the detent spring may be at fault. I have even found the spring to be missing altogether on one old Stevens 44 I bought.
