Bootleg Primers ? Lunacy.....

Went to a gun show here in Gettysburg,Pa , hosted by the usual sponsor which normally appears at least 3x/yr. Only ONE guy was offering reloading components, and I have never seen him before at any of the shows. In over 40 yrs that i've been at it the boxed primers ( 10 trays@100= box 1,000) from the top 3 (Rems, Feds, CCI) have always appeared exactly the same in their respective company colors/ packaging etc. I saw a 1,000 box of "Winchester" primers in LGTPZDABCDEFGHBS whatever colors and wondered where the hell did these come from ? And the turd wanted $210 for the box ! Powder was going for $52/lb.
And he sat there with a perplexed look on his face, wondering why nobody was stopping to look at what else he had to offer. Someone else wanted $90 for 10 M1 clips. There's no reason for any of this; there's more going on in all this than we are being told.

I really hope that people that buy and try to sell for a higher price get stuck with what they buy. I've heard of several gun shows where NO ONE was buying the $150 brick primers.

At the Thompson PA gun show there was a guy trying to sell primers for $225/1000 and rifle powder for $65/lb

Let them choke on their "hardware". There is a guy local who is now trying to get $20.00 a hundred for large rifle primers. The last primers I bought was 3 years ago and I think I paid $19.95 a thousand for them--1,000small pistol Federals. The last large rifle (Winchester) primers I bought was about 8 years ago and they were $150.00 per 5,000 shipped to my door. I believe there is a black market somewhere in the primer wholesale chain because it is not the usual gun shops and dealers that have primers, it is individuals here and there and always at highly inflated price. Same thing happened in World War II on things like automobile tires, sugar, flour, lard, coal and other staples. The blackmarket was alive and well and doing a brisk business if you could afford the prices. Greed will always be with us. james

Winchester did recently change the packaging of primers, they no longer in blue boxes, I guess the blue box ones are collectors items now, also I saw somewhere they are making them available in 1500 boxes like fiochhi does with some of there packaging.
I also have taken notice that cci has changed some colors on packaging, not as drastic as what winchester did but it is a bit different now.

Well, our Gun Show is in 2 weeks. I and 1 other INSISTED on placing a notice that price gougers will be asked to leave - not sure if it will be effective, but I feel that it's a start on the path back to normalcy.

I bought some powder yesterday for under $20 a pound. Just look around. Don't let the price gouges get the money.

Last summer I bought a sleeve of Win LR primers at Sportsman's. Normal price. Blue box.

Picked up 1000 CCI LP primers at Sportsman's last week, along with a pound of IMR4166. Also at normal prices. CCI blue is a little lighter in color. A lot more brass and bullets available, especially the bulk pistol bullets. Heck, even Lapua brass was back on the shelf (although not the .308 that I use).

The flow of stuff continues. Just be patient. As stated above, let the gougers choke on their stash.

Powder is $50lb in limited supplies of everything. Cheap 22LR are $75-$100 brick. Most primers sell out with in minutes of doors being unlocked.

I just bought a couple pounds of powder from a local shop for $32.00. The owner showed me the price he was being charged by the wholesaler he received it from and said they had raised the price by $4.00 from his previous order. He is good at keeping prices reasonable without gouging. However he does limit sales of some things to keep others from buying everything and trying to make big profits from it. The last gun show I attended had $50 powder and it looked like thirty year old primers for $200.

Where are you paying those prices? Must be a local shop raising prices to what they can get away with. Since places like Sportsman's are selling 1000 primers in the $35-40 range that means wholesale prices are not a lot different than they were before.

I think the middle man is jacking the prices up. My buddy went to another small dealer where SPP were $25/100 and was told they were going up, that they had just received notice from their supplier. My closest LGS did jack up all his prices. The last time I went there was more than a year ago, he was selling 5rd boxes or 00 buck or rifled slugs for $15-$20 box. Most pistol ammo was $50 box & Gold Dot pistol ammo was $75. CCI Stingers were $20/50rnd box & Hornady SST or Rem Accu-tip 20ga slugs were $30/5rds.

Sorry to hear about the smaller shops, but, I guess they have to survive somehow. I know that "Cheaper than Dirt" had jacked up their prices until someone caught up with them. Don't know if they were fined or not but they dropped their prices back on the stuff they still had.

Our Sportsman's is starting to build ammo and bullet inventory. Slow but sure. 9mm and 5.56 is still on the shelf a week after the truck delivers it. Powder and primers still go the day it is delivered.

I tend to "remember" those who price gouge on things like primers, powder, ammo, etc. and I take them off my list of suppliers.

ON the other hand it is not unheard of for distributors to raise prices during such times and small increase of 10% or less are to be expected until demand curtails and prices return to normal if they ever do. I saw where major ammo companies announced that they have raised prices by 5% across the board. I hope supplies return to normal as soon as possible. Just hold on and refuse to pay gouging prices and soon prices will come down. It's been a bumpy ride!
