    Juicy Fruit gum and gophers

I was chatting with my doctor at my last appointment.
He asked what I have been doing.

I told him about my vegetable garden that I planted and how I was having to deal with some gophers.
I told him that I felt like Elmer Fudd trying to catch Bugs Bunny.

He said "This may sound crazy, but it works"
"Get some Juicy Fruit gum sticks and put one or two in the hole.
The scent will make them eat it but they can't digest it and they ultimately die from the blockage.
It works for ground squirrels also."

After the appt. I went and bought a couple of packs of the gum and put it in some gopher holes and some ground squirrel holes.

The next day I went to check the ground squirrel holes and I saw where the gum stick had been moved out of the hole and looked like the squirrel covered it up with dirt.

With the gophers, I do not see any new activity but it is too soon to really know.

Any experience using Juicy Fruit gum like this?

I've heard the same juicy fruit story. We've always trapped pocket gophers. It was a way to make extra money for 22 ammo when I was a kid. Most of the farm kids around here trapped gophers. Not enough gopher trappers any more. Farm kids either for that matter. Our township pays now $4 per gopher and I'll match another $4 for any gophers trapped on my farm land. A energetic kid with a bike and basket could easily make 50 or 60 Bucks a for an hour or two before and after school. The ones willing to learn trapping are few and far between. The times are a changing! sorry for the rant.
If liars pants really did catch on fire, watching the news would be a lot more fun!

Humans cannot digest chewing gum either and a mighty lot of people over the years have swallowed what they were chewing. Never heard of anyone dying of it. I'd have to see it in action before I believed it,

Well, for me this method is a FAIL.

I continue to see gopher activity where I put the gum sticks.
In the two ground squirrel holes, I put one piece well into the hole and the other in far enough to see it so that I could monitor it.

In both of those locations the squirrel moved the gum sticks out of the hole about a foot and semi-covered them with dirt.

    Back to my traps!

Reminds me of the Irish Spring soap. Repels critters, mice included...
Welp... my mice Eat the stuff and it makes 'em poop, alot!!...but they keep eatin it..
plus side I baited 2 traps with the stuff and both worked excellent...
IME... Nothing out does moth balls for repellent.. not even a skunk can tolerate moth balls, they move out!!!
My daughter in law abhors the smell of moth balls... so, I accuse her of liking the smell of mouse turds!!!!

I trap the ground squirrels also , use a #1 longspring trap and flip it upside down over the hole that way when they come out of the hole their head gose in to the trap when the spring the pan of the trap.

I've always heard spearmint gum. Poisoning works best for me, either rodent blocks or lead!

    Thanks for the tip.
I don't have any of those traps but have some conibear 110's.
I saw a video where a guy used a 110 over a hole, much like you described and had success.
I think I will give that a try.

Have you had any success with the longspring trap by putting it just outside the hole where the squirrel will step on it when exiting the hole?
I was thinking that method might work on a hole I have that there is a bunch of sand that the squirrel dug out and I was thinking of getting one of those traps and covering it with the sand so the squirrel would not see it and then step on it.

    That was hilarious!
    Luckily nobody was injured.

Bill Murray (Caddyshack) would be proud of that method!

    Looked effective enough.
