The peep sight is an add on and in my opinion is the nicest version to have . Is it the Lyman 56 or a Redfield ?

Grumpy Old Man With A Gun....... Do Not Touch !!
Yep, it's the Lyman 56. I cleaned it all up and it works great.
The Lyman 56 is definitely a keeper, I have one on a 1950 built Model 336A in .35 Remington.

You made the right choice. I'm looking forward to the range report. One wouldn't think that there would be that much tang difference between the 36 and 336, but there it is. I always wanted one like that in 25-35 to play with.

When I gave the Winchester to my son a few years ago, I sold the dies. Mistake. But I found a four die set on Midway (on sale) and it should be here today. Luckily I kept the brass. I have a box of what looks like vintage .30-30 rounds (12 in box) but I have no idea if they're reloads, who reloaded them, or whatever, so I'll wait for the dies.
The internals are the same as the 1889 .32-20 that I have, so at least I know how to take it apart.
I made it to the range.
10 rounds: 170 gr GC bullet (.309). 7 grs Unique
10 rounds (same bullet) but with 5 grs Red Dot.
Both shot well. Accurate, mild recoil.
Actually, the 5 gr Red Dot was a little more accurate at 25 yds, and out to the gong at 100 yds.
I have some 155 gr coated bullets on the way.
As far as the rifle - smooth, easy to handle. That beefy forestock is nice.
And I called it a mongrel.
I have one of these. 36, slab side, square bolt (short carbine.) Has marlin saftey engraved on the top of its smooth receiver. Engraving on the barrel takes a magnifying glass to read. Ballard in the barrel. Got mine from a widow. 50 bucks. Don't hunt with mine. Just run paper patched lead thru it target practicing. No lyman peep on it either just factory originals. Has a real small steel front bead. Quite unlike the model 336 and its huge gold nugget bead. From my experiencing the 36 was made for fine bead shooting. A few good luck dents and dings in its wood. Although not many. Bluing is very decent. Whom ever owned mine prior took very good care of his pride & joy in and out of the MN woods. Going to keep as is. I have no use in wanting to refurbished my rifle. So far_ its cooperating in its Requirement: Just a old rifle that's guaranteed to please in the pinch's.
