Yes beware the "training rifles"....alot of these rifles were given to GI's as souvenirs.
Earlewb in previous post has it right.

Death to every foe and traitor and hurrah, my boys, for freedom !
As mentioned, the Training Rifles were what got these rifles their bad reputation, for weakness.
Actually strong modified Mauser knock off. The Japs were human photo copiers, but had above average understanding of metals, so they made good guns.
I would not modify or change anything on these guns as they are collectible, and there are plenty of butchered up Military rifles that are already ruined.
Mine 99 shoots cast pretty good. Really nothing to write home about, but I have not worked much with it.
Treat it like a marlin Micro grove, as they have Metford rifling, and use an over sized bullet.
Mine likes a Fat bullet, but bore sizes vary widely, mine will shoot a NOE314 / 299 into 1.5 inches at 50 yards.
Accuracy fell off at 100, as you have to flip up the sight and it seems slightly loose to me.
A really cool piece of history that is well worth preserving.
If any of you have no use for the hand guard from your Type 99 I know someone who is looking for one.
He is not looking for collector grade or price.
Asking for a friend!
Somewhere on the site is a post of some groups I shot with cast (RD 165 at either .310 or .311) from a Type 99 and it would do quite well at 50.
Most horrendous trigger I have ever pulled.
Amendments
The Second there to protect the First!
Most all of military weapons have heavy trigger pulls. I think that they designed them that way on on purpose.
