    Lyman 311413 data..................

I bought an 03' Springfield in January, 2020 and have decided to go ahead and load some. I would have loaded some by now, but the barrel was bad and I had to get a new one. I bought one from CMP and finally got it put on, its really a dandy! Back in the 80's I used to shoot 311413's in my Schmidt-Rubin in the 100yd. High-power matches and still have quite a supply of them. I have done the bolt face, bullet tip measurement and it works out to an overall length of 3.167, this puts the bullet base at the very bottom of the shoulder; an absolutely "perfect" load.

In looking thru my data, I found lots of bullets that weight for the 06', but have not been able to locate any actual 311413 data. Does anyone know when Lyman or "Ideal" actually printed data for the 311413 or 308413?.........

But no real data for todays powders, i would suggest to start with 10 grains of unique and go up by a half grain at the time until accuracy happens without pressure signs. This bullet is my favourite in 303 and 7.65x53 rifles.

Mine drop out at 170grs from My "hard" alloy, using an ancient Ideal 1cav.
I load them over 12grs of Unique.
I can shoot them all day in My M1917.

I have read that 1650 fps is about the upper limit then accuracy begins to go downhill fast. I have a GC one but have not cast any yet nor had a chance to shoot any. I saw a recommendation of 16.5 gr of 2400 in the .30-06 will get you there. (Thanks Ben)

I use the H&G version of this “Squibb” design. I get best accuracy when keeping the velocity at 1500fps. My normal load is also 12gr of Unique.

Many thanks to everyone for all the great info! I used to use this bullet over 19. grs 4759 in my 96/11 Schmidt-Rubin. We had 100-yd. high-power shot at a local range and this was my go-to bullet for rapid prone and rapid sitting. I think it was 83' when I shot a 10-shot "knot" about 1 1/4" across. I remember those days well. I later went to RL7,21-23grs. as it worked better thru the thrower. Thanks again!.......................

I recently bought a can of these that were in a gun shop from someone's estate sale. They grouped quite well from my .30-06 target rifle with 16 grains of 2400.

Check Lymans Cast Bullet Handbook #1. 16.0 2400 works well. Since the case capacities are very close, whatever worked in your 7.5x55 should give good results in the Springfield.

When the ‘413 was discontinued, it seemed like they continued producing it but now called it 311332. Look for data with that number and you should be fine.

311413 The Squibb gas check bullet for the Springfield and other .30-06 rifles. Perhaps the most accurate gas check bullet yet produced. Excellent for target practice up to 600 yards. Has also been largely used for small game shooting in the Northwest, particularly for ducks at long range. Makes a most excellent load where one wishes to save the wear on his barrel from the full charged factory cartridge. Powder charge 16 grains Du Pont No. 80 powder, or 23 grains Hercules Lightning powder. Also very good for other 30 calibers. (GC, SP, 169 - TP is 413)

Plenty of origional Ideal 311413 molds for sale on eBay

    308413 …. No such mold

308403 Bullet designed by Mr. Harry Pope for extreme accuracy in competitive shooting in the .30 Springfield rifle. Should be used as cast and not resized. Diameter of first four bands from point .301", fifth band .303", sixth band .305", last band .315". Bullet seated in case with fingers so mouth of case extends only half way up base band. Powder charge 12 to 15 grains Du Pont No. 80 powder. This bullet gives better accuracy up to 200 yards than any combination we know of in the Springfield, but owing to the bullet being seated so lightly in the case, it is not suitable for handling except on the target range. (PB, 167 - TP is ?)

Never have seen this mold for sale

I have a 308403 but it is no "world beater" as they used to say. My M 54 30 W.C.F. and my Savage 99 .303 ( 9-10 grains of Unique) sure like the Squib bullet. Keep the velocity under 1500 fps if you want best accuracy.

+1 for the 16.0 grain 2400 load. It will shoot very well. But beware of going too much higher--17.5 grains gave fliers and doubled group size.

Iv'e had good luck with that one in both the 7.5 swiss and the '06. For the 7.5 x 55 swiss I used 10.0 grs of unique.
For the .30-06 I used 12.0 grs of unique. Very good groups at 100 yards.

Found this load(s) in Phil Sharpe's "Complete Guide to Handloading":
    15.0 of 4759 @1252 fps
    18.0 of 4759 @ 1432 fps
    19.0 of 4759 @1475 fps

I fell for that line of propaganda many years ago. I quickly found those results only came out of a Remington-Rand.....

As Minerat mentions it is an okay bullet to around 1600 +/- fps......a long range bullet (to 600 yards).....hardly. While I never shot, long or short range, any ducks with it I did find it good for grouse as it killed them quickly slipping through with little meat damage. As for more more tenacious jack rabbits...it was a miserable failure as they would run off a long ways before they died. I quickly disposed of that mould.....lesson learned. That lesson also began the beginnings of my doubts about the "expertise" of many gun writers. Through thorough testing I've come to find many things we take a "gospel" are simply what they thought should happen or be the case, not necessarily what the case really was.

Do yourself a favor and try Lyman 311291, 311284 or 311299, 311332,311334 or their equivalents in the NOE catalog.
The Loverins, 311466, 311467 are also very good.
I think you will set aside the 311413 "Squib" bullet. Yes, Squib, it is. Thing going for it was it looked like usual jacketed ball bullets.
