Bought a long-sought caliber today - 9.3x62. Wanted one for years.

My “big gun” has always been my 8x57. I’ve wanted a 9.3x62 for about 15 years. I didn’t want one of the Blaser rifles, though; just wanted a classic like a Ruger, Husqvarna, etc.

Finally found a Husqvarna for $595 at Simpson Ltd., and pulled the trigger. It DOES have the common fracture in the stock behind the tang - I knew that going in and will have to have it repaired. Not too big a deal, I think.

The more pressing task now is to find brass, and a mold. Any suggestions? I am open to trade, or purchase from anyone here, BTW, and I’ll post something about it shortly in WTB/WTT.

Anyhow, I’m pretty pumped to start developing loads for a Husky 9.3x62! From light loads on up to heavies...

Congrats on achieving a dream. I sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as you anticipated. I find the anticipation to be more exciting than the actual acquisition. Prolly just me. You do have the added challenges of finding brass, boolit moulds, etc. Especially in these times.

Today I took a safe queen out and burned some powder. A Ruger 77/357. It's a really nice rifle and has an old Leopold M8 3X on it that has spent a lot of time with me in the mountains and fields of Alaska. Looking through that scope reminded me of some good times.

I think you will be very happy with your choice, I wanted a 9.3x62mm Mauser some years back, and built on on a 98 Mauser action with a barrel blank, Lucky for me the lath time and my time is not very valuable. I have been able to able to get brass from shooters pro shop,
The necking 30-06 brass up to .375 and sizing the neck back down to 9.3 giving it a bit of shoulder so it can be fire formed to the chamber is really time consuming, and a boolit from Accurate mold 36-285C have shown to be a good performer.

Jim...I hear what you’re saying about anticipation, acquisition, and memories. I have a few firearms that I thought I had to have but, as time goes on, I pick up less and less. The ones that I do go back to are the ones that have seen the good places and done the good things with me. Hoping this new one will be part of some of that.

Noe makes a great mold for the 9.3! I am at whitetail #8 and wouldn’t back off shooting a moose if given a less then 200 yd shot. If you can’t get a mold pm me and we will work out something for me to cast you some to get started with.

Will the Husky's chamber allow using .270 or .30-06 brass in forming cases? Seems like buying new brass ($0.82 / ea.) is getting to be pretty expensive. Fire-forming / blowing the shoulder forward with a cast boolit stuck in the case mouth and bumping the lands to hold the case against the bolt face would be the only way I could justify the cost of brass, but I am cheep cheep.

Oh, my God, Thanks Be to YOU, LORD!!!... so the backstory: about 12-13 years ago, I saw a 9.3x62 listed for sale. I don’t remember where. I emailed the guy, we agreed to the sale (I don’t remember the price; I THINK it was a kind of Frankenmonster, mauser-ish action in a McMillan-type stock). The long and the short of it is that the guy backed out of the sale. I never gave him any money or anything like that, he just stopped responding to emails.

But...as I was waiting for the transaction to take place, I started to get set to reload for the rifle. In those days I didn’t cast boolits. Just used J-words. So...I ordered FOUR packs of 100 Prvi Bullets, 9.3mm (.366) 285g SP!! AND, I ordered 200 GRU 9.3x62 brass cases!!! The headstamp is actually “GRAF 9.3x62”.

I had TOTALLY forgotten about putting this stuff away in an old ammo can, and I remembered it only bout an hour ago...I could barely find the can, tucked in behind a bunch of stuff! I can’t tell you how glad I was to see that can with the piece of tape on it that says “9.3x62, Bullets, Brass”!!!!

SO...I am SET, for now! Giddy LOL. I also ordered today, from Titan, a set of Lee 9.3x62 PaceSetter dies and a 9.3x62 Quick Trim Die.

This little stroke of luck couldn’t have come at a better time! Thought I would share the story of my good fortune. I’ve never won a lottery of any kind, but tonight I feel like I did!

You will enjoy it; great cartridge. I had a 9.3x62 CZ550 American and it shot the 270 gr Speer and the PPU bullets very well. I killed a deer with it with one offhand 70 yard shot. So it has a place in my memory.
I moved from it to the .358 Winchester, then back to the 8x57mm, now my "heavy" is the 30-40 Krag....
Before it went away for a Sako, I was thinking of getting a Lee 9mm Makarov .366" mould for plinking bullets.
Please post pics of that Husky; I saw one in 9.3 x 57 recently and I like the trim lines!

That all sounds good, Tex. I am hoping to get an elk and a black bear with it in the next year or two. Certainly a couple of deer.

By the way, if you are looking for some very nice looking-9.3x57’s, Simpson Ltd. in Galesburg, IL has a ton of them. Old Husqvarna’s. I’ve held them before (the Husqvarna 9.3x57’s) at Cabela’s. They balance nicely and seem well-made, and don’t seem to have the cracking problem in the stock behind the tang like the x62’s do. Maybe because of less power. I don’t know why I never bought one...I think I’ve just had it in my mind that they are kind of underpowered. But they do look and feel nice.

Simpson Ltd. was good to deal with.

I will post pics if I can figure out how, once I get the rifle in my hands.

Someone here, sorry don't remember who, sent me some bullets cast from an NOE mold for my 9.3x57. They shot great with 20 gn of 2400.
I've worked with two x57s and they both had very long chambers. So necking up to .416 then back to 9.3 to form a new shoulder was needed. The x57s seem to have bores in the .368-.369" range, so I've been sizing Speer .375-235s down and shooting them. I can get 2550 fps with H4895. Your x62 should be able to beat that by 200fps ish...

I did that for my 9.3x57, and that light bullet powered by a bit of 700x or Unique makes very fun and frugal on both lead and powder plinking / small game rounds. These old Husqies on that trim Swede action are very svelte and light, with great feeling stocks for offhand iron sight shooting.

I will third, fourth or fifth the 9.3 Husky's. Mine just makes me grin. A X62 has to be like my 45-90 compared to a 45-70, just more of a good thing...

I have handled the Husqvarna 9.3x57’s at Cabela’s. It was a few years ago. I remember thinking, “these things handle and point like a beautifully balanced double shotgun.” Foolishly maybe, I passed on the 9.3x57’s, thinking (evidently mistakenly) that they were too underpowered for any hunting that I might ever do. Since buying the 9.3x62 I’ve done a lot of searches for threads on it here at CastBoolits. Had no idea that so many of you like the 9.3x57’s! I hope this 9.3x62 (I don’t have it yet—it’s still with my FFL) handles like those 9.3x57’s did.

One thing I’ve noticed about the old Husqvarna’s in the higher-pressure calibers is that they seem to commonly have a crack in the stock behind the tang. About half of the ones that I’ve seen advertised do. The salesman at Simpson Ltd. confirmed this. He said about half of the rifles that they get in have this. It must have been some problem with the type of wood they used or the bedding situation of the action in the stock, he said. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to getting it, and working up loads for it, after I get the stock fixed. Sending the stock straight to The Stock Doctor in Sheboygan. He once did a good job for me on a Win 24 SxS.
