Several years ago I bought some specimen xray containers from a member here.. They had a truncated cone shape on one end then a square hole on the other end, if I remember right they were 16 bn, when I recently moved I found that I still have 4 of them. Anyone else remember these and how they cast and melted?

big problem they had NO tin. Back then tin was not pricey it is now
Member selling those was from NC, I can’t remember his user id but he recently posted a 600+lb wts.

According to the calculator these cores should come in around 11bhn and have the alloy of 1 % Sn/3% Sb/96% Pb

The makeup on these Isotope Cores was reported to be 1% Tin, 3% Antimony, and 96% lead. I have a whole bunch of this lead, and it casts great. It's super clean alloy too. I use it for all my handgun loads, and if I need harder I can water drop it or sweeten it with some Lino.

It's nicknamed a moly cow, used to extract one radioactive material, to be used in medical diagnostics, from another that decays into it.
My experience matches that of too many things. It's clean alloy, but of the fifty odd that I've gotten from my radiopharmacy source, none tested have had any tin to speak of. All of mine came from the same radiopharmacy just in the past four years, so it could be a local or recent change in alloy that accounts for the tin difference compared to older reports. The 3% Sb content seems to hold up across all samples, though.

Hi Kevin is that the alloy you cast from? do you need TIN or just cast hot?

I guess I could cast hot; I hear it works just fine. But since I have a good supply of pewter and other tin and since this nearly 32# chunk of lead needs to be melted down to make usable casting ingots anyway, I turn it into 95-3-2 alloy and that's all I ever cast with.
