    Plain-basing a 358156.

I picked up a second Lyman 358156 mold NIB at a gun show a couple years ago and was thinking about plain basing it, or more precisely having it done for me, as I am leery of messing it up.
    Who would do this work?
    Thanks.

Sure it will work but Lyman and others make molds for this without a gas check. If I didn't have one I would swap with you. To me the 358156 is more accurate at higher speeds. If a good 4 cavity we can talk.

Which way are you thinking of going, bore out gas check groove or mill off the top of the mold?

    Removing the groove.
As said, I have another but bought this one new in the box for $15. Double cavity.

If I was to do it though I would mill down the top.

I have the exact same dilemma. If you mill the top you would lose the sprue plate screw seating depth as well as lessen the weight of the boolit considerably, would you not. Anyone ever done the gas check ring removal at home?

+1 for Erik at hollowpointmold.com. Had him bore out the gas check shank on mine.

There have been a couple of offers to buy and trade in this thread, which is a violation of the rules (even in jest). Please read the T.O.S. at the top of every page if in doubt as to what is allowed.

    Hope this helps.

I have two of the plain base 358156 molds from Tom @ Accurate Molds . They are 4 cavity molds so I can cast a lot in a short time . I have cast a boat load of cast bullets over the years . It is my primary bullet for my 38 special / 357 magnum loads as they are very accurate shooting . Regards Paul
