Question, 5r or polygonal rifling for a 6 or 6.5 CM?

I have a 6mm Remington on a short 700 action varmint model, I would love to rebarrel it to a 6 CM, .243 or 6.5 CM.

Question is about the 5r rifling or polygonal rifling such as PacNor offers, which of the two is the better choice? Long varmints is the objective. TYVM, LC

I have a Bartlein barrel in 30 caliber with the 5R rifling. It is superbly accurate. I am talking .75 inch groups at 200 yards on a calm day.
I have never used polygonal so I can't do a comparison.

I have three rifles with the 5R rifling they are amongst my most accurate rifles, one in particular is a Rem700 SPS .308 with 1:7 ROT 16.5” barrel. Early before the 300 B/O was introduced, skunk works at Remington did some fast twist 5R fluted 16.5” barrels and screwed them on the 700 SPS action to play with 220 gr. SMK’s and Trail Boss powder subsonically didn’t work out for them. So Remington put those crappy green and black plastic stocks boxed them up and sent them out as Rem. 700’s .308 16.5” fluted SPS rifles and the LGS here had one on the shelf NIB for $600.00.I had no idea what I had until a serial # research with a phone call to Remington and a very nice fellow gave the story. They do the same thing with M24’s everything the Gov. used to buy they get put out for sale.

Unless the 6mm Remington barrel is worn out, it will hang easily with the other cartridges mentioned for long range varmints. But I totally understand the "want to" involved- done it more than once. Good luck with your project.

I just bought a T/C Compass 2 in 6.5 Creedmoor and it has the 5r rifling
it is very accurate and it will shoot very small 100 yard groups
not bad for a 200 dollar rifle
