    38-56 Timken

Anyone know anything about this cartridge. Internet doesn't seem to have anything specific to the Timken variant but a lot about 38-56 in general.
    Thanks in advance

Recently seen a Ruger Number 1 and Ruger M77 supposedly chambered for this round. Since I have a penchant for the weird and a bucket full of money . . . just trying to see what I'd be getting into. And yes it does sound like a bearing - most google results I get come back with timken bearings.

Do you know, is it a variation of the 38-56 Winchester based on the parent 45-70 Govt. case?

Probably irrelevant, but Timken made the steel for Douglas barrels at one time.

You might contact one of the chambering reamer guys Manson, Clymer for a drawing of the cartridge. Some one had to grind that reamer

For a variation on the 38-56 case that rifle would need a 45-70 bolt face and extractor

I wonder if its just a "standard" 38 56 with a timken barrel stamp.

There are so many places to "change / improve" a cartridge. It could 1 of these slightly different body taper or shoulder angle, slightly different neck dia or length rim dia. The ackleys had the body taper and shoulders blown out when factory ammo was fired. Some required actual forming from the parent case.

What Im wondering about is the rifles you state if its based on a wsm case for a .532 bolt face and necked up to 375 caliber? I believe the .610 bolt face is to large for the 77s bolt and extractor. Only a chamber cast and measuring would tell. Or contact the seller and ask fr more info.

I wouldn't bet on it being anything close to a 38-56 WCF, or even based on a .45-70. It may or may not even be based on a cartridge, belted or not, with a .532 head.

With that being said, it is cheap enough right now to bid on as a donor action. You could do a chamber cast (highly recommended) then decide from there.

56 mm case? 9.5x56 variant? Would suit the Ruger 77.
It'll be handy if I never need it.

The .284 Win has the same HEAD diameter as the 45-70 or 38-56. It would have a shoulder for headspace and the rim would fit a Ruger 77 bolt.
