    Acraglas Black Dye - Help

I need to dye some Acraglas gel black to attempt to repair a buttplate, and I already used the black dye balloon that came with my kit. Looks like Brownells is out of stock on them. Suggestions on what might work without messing up the strength of the epoxy?

    Thanks
    Jim

    Check with your Craft Stores.
I have found pigments for fiberglass resins that works the same.
One other place I use to get resin pigment was Boat Repair shops or Marine Supply Shops.
Lots of them had tubes of pigment left over from jobs that they gave me for free.
The black and brown pigments were common to be left over from repair kits they used on the boats.

    .

You need an epoxy dye, so a kitchen granite installer near you may have some, but if not - google is your friend:

Do you have some Jarrow's Inletting Black? Mixing some of that into the AccraGlas will work.

Carbon black can be used to color adhesives.

    I use artist acrylic paint.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

I use acrylic dye. IIRC I got a small bottle off Evilbay cheap.

How do you know these random products don't effect the strength of the epoxy?

Carbon is a neutral and is used for tinting various adhesives as well as rubber products. So it won't effect the epoxy.

Lampblack powder! It mixes easily and does not affect the strength of the bedding.

I’ve used acrylic paint that is sold for model airplanes/cars to dye epoxy, but never for bedding. The trick is to mix the epoxy well to start the chemical reaction before adding a drop or two of paint. I’d try it on a test piece to see if it is worth trying for bedding.

Brownells has small jars of it, so no problem. https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-t...1046-3809.aspx

That little thirteen dollar jar of colorant will last any normal person about three lifetimes, it doesn't take much.

Surf board shops have it. I just bought some from my local surf shop. You might have a problem finding a Surf Shop in PA?

My last two tubes of Red and Black lasted for 36 years and finally went to pot because they totally dried out.

I use pigment from the paint store. I take a small bottle tell them I making black epoxy and I usually get a squirt for free.
