Get something with magnetic damper ... Anything is better !

Lessee ... I think it been at least a couple of years since the last oil damped scales were made. Or maybe 50 years?

I try and avoid buying cell phone with a 6" aerial sticking out the top, and it a while since I bought car with a starting handle.

Apart from the fact that it's oil damped - the old Redding #1 was a better, more sensitive scale - the 350 gn maximum being a bonus too.

I'm talking about the green #2 Redding scale.... I saw one on e-bay that only goes to 350 grains,
one one that goes to to 500.
OK, I just saw where somebody painted a #1 green and tried to pass it off as a #2

I bought the Redding #1 in 1967 ...top of the line then !
I used it for 40 years then someone stole it ! .... I now wished they had stolen it sooner ... that magnetic dampening is SWEET ! I don't throw anything that's working out so I just kept using the Redding #1 ...
    Replaced it with an RCBS 5 - 0 - 5 .

I snagged an old Redding a few years back that is oil dampened and is made like a tank. I got it for cheap and it appeared to have never been used or was slightly used. This is one I would still buy over any offered nowadays. Decades ago “quality” meant something different than it does today.

I've been using a brown crinkle Redding for nearly 50 years. Keep the pivot points clean and it'll probably stay accurate for the next guy's lifetime. It's one of the oil dampened ones, but have never used any oil in it to prevent oily messes. Growing up, I used dads scale that had no type of dampening at all, so never knew I was missing anything.

I found a Lyman D7 scale and it is probably as accurate as any scale out there.
I've checked it with a number of different weights, and it's dead nuts on.
It's very sensitive to any air movements. The knob to raise the beam off it's
seat is different. I don't know if it's really needed.

Have a 1960’s Redding #2, it does anything I ask it to do.

Been using one since late fifties.
Use finger tip under beam end to dampen oscillations, then let it float and it stops.
Beam end touches fi ger tip from below just one light touch and it stops pretty quick after that.

I have multiple 3BR measures. Liked the first one well enough to buy a few extras. May be better powder measures out there, but this is a pretty solid unit.

I have used a Redding No2 for 25 years. Excellent build (US manufacture), reliable, virtually failsafe. Cannot vouchsafe the new ones of ?foreign manufacture.

I bought one used decades ago, I think it was from the 50's, never had a problem with it.
