    Two-ball load using MG42 wads

Tested some 2-ball loads today with Longshot. Here’s the recipe for my best load:
    1. 26 grs of Longshot
    2. 2.75” Fiocchi hull
    3. MG42 wad with a 20 ga nitro card in the base.
    4. Two .60 cal hardcast RB’s with a BPI red low profile gas check between the balls.
    5. BPI #47 buffer until top ball is barely covered.
    6. Bingo chip as an overshot disk.
    7. Roll crimp

(I didn’t use a gas seal like the pic posted below)

Gun was a Mossberg 590A1 20” threaded barrel with a Modified Remchoke. 2.5” pattern at 50 yards.

    Now that I like!

I've been toying with loading up some Tri-Ball loads but really don't need or want that much stomp! At both ends!

I did play with some two ball loads about a year ago with mediocre results. The only suitable wads I had were a few CSD was which did not hold up well. Made me think of James Gate's comment about the wads he chose for Tri-Ball... he said nothing else held up. While my two ball loads weren't in the same league as Dixie Tri-Ball they beat up those CSD wads badly.

I am liking the 2 1/2" group at 50 yards! That is pretty impressive.

I believe I will give your load a try. I'm sure that would be a good bear defense load. We have lots of black bears of pretty decent size and a few grizzlies. I have not run into grizzlies while in the bush so far but have seen them while driving. Black bears are everywhere here. Makes a guy a bit nervous when picking huckleberries sometimes.

Thanks for posting that load and results! Good info!

I loaded some without buffer up to 27 grs. Those patterned awful.

I loaded the buffered loads up to 27 grains as well, but I found that at 26.5 grs of longshot, bases start blowing. 26 grs seems to be the sweet spot for this gun.

    Tried IC chokes, too.

I may try to run these with a full.

James Gates recommended extra full chokes for his Tri-Ball loads. I'd figure the same would apply for two ball loads... except I have a cylinder bore gun so I won't be using a tight choke or any choke! DOH!

I'd like to try the two ball sabots from SIARM except they haven't returned any info after I tried to contact them.

We’ll see if it’ll pattern as good as it looks.

BT did you check pressure of your two ball loads?

    Just curious.

I have not. But I will. I suspect it’s fairly mild.

On the same theme... have you checked pressure for the original Dixie Tri-Ball loads?

    Two-ball load using MG42 wads

I have some loaded up, except I downloaded Blue Dot and Steel a couple grains. I’ll be shooting those out of a 3” chamber. Did you ever see my results from shooting them in my 935 and 835? Wads where in very poor shape. Half melted. I suspect it’s due to large overbore diameter of Mossberg’s back bored chambers. If I was a betting man, I’m thinking the solid projectiles don’t get a chance to “swell” in the wad base like shot to help it obturate in the bore, causing major gas blow by.

I’ll do a “post mortem” examination of wads shot out of both 3 and 3.5” chambers for comparison to test my hypothesis.

Back to pressure, from my experience, me thinks Jame’s recipes for the triball load is over SAMMI spec for 3” 12 ga (may be close or over for 3.5”), but at this point, it’s pure speculation

Thank you. I used a different buffer. Could be the issue.

There we go! And again, I am sure I read that but forgot. I blame the memory loss on a misspent youth!

10,200 PSI is about as much pressure as I would want I think but safe and sane.
