Old European single set trigger, two questions

I have a Cape Gun and the rifle side has a single set trigger. To make a long story short when I got it the spring had been broken and welded and broke again, I had a new spring made years ago. The lock now fires a round when the trigger is used unset, but when it is set it does not fire. The firing pin is loose, not binding. The set is very light - my question is - do I screw the set screw in or out to give the set trigger a heavier pull.

Second question is - is this likely or not to change the ability of the lock to fire the cartridge when the trigger is set?

Obviously, I know little or nothing about how these things work.

For what its worth this gun was made in Stettin, Germany (now Poland) sometime between 1885 and April 1, 1892.

    .

Guns made in that timeframe could have any number of standard or odd DST's, so I would suggest you determine how to adjust it via obtaining/making snapcap(s) and dry fire the trigger at various adjustment screw settings.

Thanks, I guess I should have figured that out. I sent a chamber cast to Dave Davidson (CH4D) and he told me that, yes, I have a 10.5x47R as I had told him, and it was different from his other 23 10.5x47R chambers! He said back then everyone made their own reamers and none of them were standard.

All the set triggers that I've seen you back the screw out to increase the trigger/sear engagement to increase the amount of pressure needed to trip the set.

I thought about your problem. If you're saying the hammer does fall but the rifle doesn't fire the only reason that I can come up with, and it's only a guess, is that when you use the set trigger the sear, when tripped, is not held away from the tumbler, assuming it is a hammer gun, and is dragging and slowing the hammer fall. I believe a stronger hammer spring will solve your problem. If the hammer isn't falling then there are a couple of mechanical problems that should be easy enough to fix.

As elk hunter mentioned, hammer or hammerless? On all my German drillings, double rifles, bolt actions, stalking rifles, Schuetzen rifles and combination guns you back out the screw to increase sear engagement.

I wrote an article for the GGCA on the 10.5 X 47R. When loaded with BP it's very similar to our old 40-82 WCF. Dave is correct about chambers. If you like to work with old, obsolete and obscure German firearms and cartridges as I do, it can be maddening at times

Hammer, and the external firing pin in a screwed in boss? Not sure how to describe it. Left side is 16x2.5" Damascus. Right side is Fluid Steel rifle. I load it with 777 and a boolit I designed on Dan's old website, now unfortunately gone. I'll have to pull the lock, I haven't looked at it in a couple years, and have two grandchildren in the house currently (4yrs. and 2.5yrs.) so all the guns are locked up except one and it's very high and out of sight - and loaded.

I don't know what your problem is, but I am a big fan of the Euro double set trigger. Best trigger every made was the Canjar Single Set trigger. They were complex, expensive gismos, but there never was a sweeter rifle trigger.
