8mm Mauser - H335 with heavy cast boolits?

    First post...here goes...

I am working up some reloads for a K98k mauser. I have an NOE mold I am casting with hardball and then sizing to .323". With a copper gas check and fully lubed with carnauba blue, they come in around 215 grains.

From what I've read, H4895 is superior to H335 with 8mm. While I have a good supply of H335 on hand, I don't have any H4895 and refuse to pay over $100/lb. right now with today's going prices. I have found decent, safe loads worked up using H335 and the Lee 175 grain boolits. I've also found recipes starting at 40 grains of H4895 for 220 grain slugs. However, I can't find any information or load data with the heavier slugs and H335.

Any suggestions for starting loads of H335 with heavier boolits in the 210-220 grain range? Not overly concerned with maximum fps right now, just something safe and accurate to start with for plinking until prices and supply hopefully normalize and I can get some H4895.

The only listing for a heavy 8mm Mauser bullet with H335 I could find in any of my manuals (Speer, Lyman, Hornady) and Ken Waters Pet Loads is for 200gr jacketed in the Speer #14 with a starting load of 38.0gr at 2066fps and max of 42.0gr at 2322fps tested in a Mauser 98 24". Their loads exceed SAAMI and approach 50,000 CUP so starting load is probably closer to SAAMI max than not.

The lee manual lists h 335 loads for the 308 and 30-06 but not 8mm. I to shoot h4895 in my mausers. 25 grains with the noe 326365. My gun club just got in a 8 lb jug of h4895 so was happy to buy a couple lbs.

Are you sure .323 size head is going to be a good fit in your K98? I have to size mine to .325 and its got a mint bore. If you can find it, W748 is good for 8mm.

Not sure on the .323 sizing yet. I was able to obtain a pound of H4895 and loaded a few up with that instead of H335 over the weekend.

I used once-fired R-P brass, Federal 210 primers, 36 grains of H4895 and seated the 215 grain bullet with a light crimp in the second groove from the top for an OAL of 3". I did not test for accuracy at this point; just wanted to make sure everything worked and didn't see any signs of overpressure. I averaged 2,000-2,100fps out of my 24" K98k.

I have that same mold. I also powder coat and GC mine when loading. That works good in 98 Mausers.
