In the context of this forum for me it means I like and respect your opinions and I want you on a friends list so I can easily locate your posts when I want.

Your friends posts will show on your profile so if you go to your profile you will quickly find what they are posting and where.

Along the lines of what Minerat said.
Friends posts show up on your profile so you can follow their posts more easily and learn from them. Find the smartest people on the forum and have them as friends, it will quickly expand your knowledge.

So if my smartest friends are the ones that just read, and don't post, then what?

This could be a philosophical snag.

Yes you have to accept them as a friend.

May be creepy but as their friend you are stalking them in reverse in your analysis. Are you aware they are watching you? Friendship is a 2 edged sword in real life too, you get out if it what you put in.

Many of my friends have passed on, but they were
people I respected and listened to. Really knowledgeable and had a good grasp of reloading and casting, as well as alloy. I don't see a lot of that any more, sorry to say.

One more flip side of the coin. If you haven't been asked to be "friends" with anyone that's an indication no-one finds your posts particularly interesting or noteworthy.

And if this is the case while there are thousands of visits to your profile page you're probably a jerk

I go back to my profile a lot to find a thread I posted on, but can't remember the title. Something like a very short memory, age I guess. CRS.
