Was given some. I have done some searches, apparently discontinued 2014. Is it "THE cast boolit rifle powder"? I would like to hear some of your experience.

Howdy !
Had read about this powder for years, but never tried it until finally one day.....
I used it for reduced (" accuracy " ) load in my Marlin M-336 XLR .35 Rem .
It proved to be outstanding under both Remington 150PSPs ( " plated " ), and 195gr SPBTs that I pulled from .45 calibre saboted'
muzzle loader rounds. I " patched " the latter w/ nylon DYMO labe maker tape. With the 150PSPs, I was also shooting Remington brass; and even Remington primers a lot of the time. So, along w/ the SR4759; it was like shooting reloads straight out of the old
IMR reloading pamphlet they used to put out.
With regards,

Have read that it has been discontinued.
IMR 4759 was probably the best overall powder for cast bullets. It covers a wide range of calibers. Too bad it was discontinued.
The powder was originally produced to load reduced velocity frangible 30-06 ammo for the military. It's primary use was in teaching aerial gunnery . The powder was designed to be bulky. It became the go to cast bullet powder after WWII and there has been none better for that purpose.
Disclaimer: The above is not holy writ. It is just my opinion based on my experience and knowledge. Your mileage may vary.

and i just shot some today in 7.5x55 K31 with 174 grain cast, three groups were one ragged hole each and one just out. this was shooting 5 shot groups at 25 meters...open sights (issue) and with 72 year old eyes. i dont know why they could not have done a batch every year...im sure the bean counters were behind shutting off the faucet.
it was around for a long time. very bulky to fill the case for very effective cast bullet loads and Lyman had tested loads for many many rifle calibers if you go through some of the older Lyman manuals
The latest Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 4th Edition still lists it for many cartridges. On burning rate charts it is just a bit faster than 4227 which we know can vary based on cartridge usage. The Lyman Handbook usually lists both when either of them is called for so you can see the similarity/difference in each application.
I use it in cast bullet loads in my Finn model 27 in 7.62x54r. Also schutezen shooters love it in 32-40 and 38-55. And even some use it in the 45/70. Frank

I have used it with cast bullets in 338W Mag, 308W and even a 357 Magnum carbine with great results.
Winelover
I've used it in a XP-100 in 7BR with 139-150 grain jacketed bullets. Used it with 139 grain jacketed bullets in a 7tcu in a Contender. Wish I had more than the 1 or 2 pounds I have left.

Excellent powder for duplex black powder reloads ...

My friend bought it during the Obama panic shortages. It's a sealed 8 lb jug, so it will last me a while.
My "go to" powder for all cast rifle loads. Its hollow tube granules preclude accidently "double charging" a case. I've found it particularly accurate in .45 Colt rifles.
Sadly I used all mine. It was the best CB powder I ever tried in my 7x57 with a 287308
Darn near perfect in my 06 with lighter loads.

For cast bullet loads in Military style rifle cartridges (308, 30-06, 8x57, 7.62x54 etc) it can not be beat, though there are proponents of 5744 who say that "It's just as good." Maybe, but 5744 was always a third more costly in my neck of the woods with spotty availability. When my last bottle runs dry, I'll miss it.

I use it for .30-06, .30-40, .30-30, .22 Hornet, .25-20 Single Shot - all cast loads, naturally. .32-40 single shot target rifle sometimes but 4227 shoots a little better for me. I had a little less than 20 pounds of it a couple months ago and then scored an old keg of it locally. I'm good for the long haul, I hope.
When I heard of its discontinuance I scurried around buying it up where/when I found it. It became almost a mania for me! Glad now that I did.
It's also one of the best powders for the .500 Smith & Wesson. I use 26.5 grains behind the RCBS 400 grain cast bullet. It runs average of 1250 fps, and the groups at 25 yards are usually clover-leaf. I've got about 10 lbs of it, so enough to last me the rest of my life, probably.
