I have the LEE 223 full length sizing die
It has the collet on top that holds the decapping/expander pin.
I've never been able to get that pin to be flush with the top of the collet.
It sticks up 0.080" past the collet face.
I did a little measurement to see whats going on:
If I take the decapper/expander pin and put it in a 223 case
Then put a shell holder on the case head
And I measure from the top surface of the shell holder to the top of the pin, I get 3.077"
If I then measure 3.077" from the bottom of the FL sizing die, the top of the caliper goes right to 3.077" above the screwed in collet face, just like it does when its installed.
So...there is actually no way the pin would be flush with that collet face. The pin bottoms out on the top of the case head. Its not getting pushed up because the expander ball is too tight or the pin needs to be polished.
Just wondering what the hive mind thinks about this. Seen lots of posts on the world wide web about this situation and nobody mentioned this.
Good news is, its not a problem, apparently. Unless the expander ball wont work unless its lower..but thats not the case right?
