    22 Hollow Point maker?

When I was growing up, you could buy solid 22 LR ammunition for significantly less than hollow points so we would of course buy that with our hard earned money. I bought a tool from an ad in Shotgun News that would fit over the bullet and had a drill bit centered in the bottom of it - a couple of twists would result in a hollow point bullet. The tool was approximately the size of a billiard chalk, round, with a knurled surface.
Anyone know where that might be available?

(Currently going through a few cases of Baikal ammo that I've had since the early 90's, and hollow points seem to kill gophers and prairie dogs a lot more humanely)

Yours may have been the hollow pointer by Al Georg back in the day. Forster now makes a similar tool, generally for centerfire rounds. This is why I saved all those old Gun Digests!

Paco Kelly now makes a hand swaging tool that yields a hollow point along with bulging the OD of the bullet for a better chamber fit. The premium swager is the one by Neal Waltz - this one is press mounted and he supplies a proper shell holder.

Saw a tool a while back for "bumping" 22 lR bullets to increase the diameter for better accuracy. One of the bump tools had a pin in the middle for making hollow points. This tool was designed to make cheep ammo shoot better by enlarging the diameter to .225". Works in a reloading press just like a sizing die.

Yessir, that's just what Neal Waltz makes. Lovely work.

    .

    FWIW

I long ago learned how to fashion standard .22LR RN bullets into a very inexpensive small game bullet, similar to CCI's SGB.

All that was required for the transformation was to file a flat onto the tip of the RN slugs.

They work just as good as HP's, if not better - since they don't tear up as much meat on small animals as HP's.

I recently purchased the Neil Waltz die. I haven't had the chance to try it much yet. It does bump bullets up to .225, making cheap promotional ammo shoot better. It excells at this. Doesn't seem to do too much for match grade ammo though. You can make vicious looking hollow points with this die, with the hollow point punch.

We used to cut an X in the nose with our Barlow knife. You don't need to go very deep - in fact the deeper your cuts the more accuracy suffers. I well remember how much more effective they were on cottontails than regular uncut solids.

I use the old D-Rock dies set with 4 different punches for different shape points.

If you have a lathe, you can make a couple of simple parts that fit into a Lee "Universal Expander" die body to make a tool that works like the Waltz. I have the drawing.

I do the same, works great, easy and quick to do. I drilled a piece of steel round stock to the proper diameter, hardened it, and can put in a cartridge and file the point in seconds.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Has anybody seen a side-by-side test in gelatin, comparing flat point with hollow point?

when i was 15+/-yo, took a piece of 1/8" thick steel and i drilled it out to accept a 22 flat nose(i think it was 1/8" bit?) . i then glued it to piece a wood that i drilled to accept a 22lr. put it together with 22lr rn and bastard file the nose off bullet(about 2 or 3 strokes) and then i have 22lr fn bullet. boy, did i ever smack squirrels with a fn.

i wonder what i did with the 22lr fn maker?

I never did it myself that I can remember but I have heard all my life that cutting an X with a pocket knife into a round nose bullet made it more effective. I think I will have to see that demonstrated before I could accept it. Ammo manufacturers are not stupid and I think if such a simple solution was effective they would have picked it up years ago. james

No, they're not stupid - they make more $$$$ by selling the latest whiz-bang option than they would doing something simple...…..
