It was originally designed with square (almost, a few degrees of draft) lube grooves. They do hold more lube than a rounded one.

Back in the day ... bullet lubes were not exactly high tech. and the more bear grease and hog lard lube you could get in there the better . Elmer Keith insisted on square bottom lube grooves and at first Lyman / Ideal made them that way ... then Lyman changed them to round bottomed and Elmer had a Hissey Fit and wrote letters and generally said they were wrong to change them .
Well ...honestly Today in the year 2021 we have much better lubes and can get buy with less lubricant . Some people think the square bottomed grooves are better and they might have been back then with poor lube but not today . With good modern lubes I haven't found that they shoot any more or less accurately .
