custom 44 barrel leading

Hello everyone, this may not be the proper place to ask but I will give it a try. I have a custom five and a half inch bisley by David Clements. It shoots 7.5 grains of unique and a 250 grain lead head bullet very good, however I get leading in front of the forcing cone. Mr Clements said to try 16 grains of 4227 which I did and the leading went away, however it is not near as accurate. He said some guns will lead with unique but I hope this isnt one of them. He also said the gun wont leave the shop unless the dimensions are perfect, so that is out of the equation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any feedback.

Try pushing one of your bullets nose first into the chambers exit holes.
This is a test to detect how loose or tight the chamber throats are.
The bullet should have tight sliding fit.
Too loose the bullet my not swell up particularly if the powder charge is not making maximum rated pressure for the cartridge.
Too loose a fit in the chamber throats (all 6) is inviting powder gas blow by which acts as a plasma torch and melts the side of the bullet depositing lead in the bore.
Slower powder = cooler powder gases less heat to melt the lead bullet.

I shoot 10 grs Unique with a 250 gr lswc I cast for 44 mag. Sized to .430" Bullet needs to be hard, so my thumb nail can NOT mark it. Alloy is wheel weights and I add 2" of Rotometal bar linotype into my Lee 10 pound pot.

Same bullet works with 23 to 24 grs of W296 powder.

What are you shooting? 44 Special?

Perfect dimensions of not, I would check the Cyl forcing cone dia using pin gages. It's odd a slower powder diesnt cause the leading but some say a faster powder bumps the bullet base faster.
