    DuPont 5066

Stopped in a small gun shop run by a elderly couple and picked up some oldies but goodies. One was a full can of Dupont pistol 5066 Powder in perfect condition.I ask the man how much and he said you can have it for 10 bucks but please don't throw the powder out , he told me "shoot it" and that's what I did this morning. 38 special and a 148 gr Speer HBWC with no problems and fine accuracy too.

That was the very first powder I bought back in 1966. And, that what I used it for, .38 Spec. wadcutters. Haven't seen any now for years.

A friend stopped by yesterday with a great buy on powder.
He bought several of the old metal IMR cans of unopened powder.
He sold me 1 can of IMR 4227 and a can of IMR 4064 for $16 each.
Old friends are the best friends.

I was gifted a can of 5066 about a month ago, not much data out there, even in the old manuals(and I've got a bunch of old manuals).

What are your favorite loads and source of load data if you've got it. Can't let it go to waste.

Lymans handbook of cast bullets copyright 1958. Has load data using 5066 starting with 30 Luger and ends with .455 Colt or Webley. Manual states Dupont 5066 was a improved version of #5 powder.
    358395 148gr HBWC loads with 5066 start @ 3.2 and max was 5.0
I used 3.0 grs with Speer's HBWC In my pistol

It was supposedly THE target pistol powder in the 50's and 60's. I know I have some manuals with data for it around here somewhere.

Speer #6 reloading manual should have data for 5066. I don't have one, found one guy on Smith & Wesson site using 2.7 grs of 5066 with wadcutter in 38 spl

I used to grab up Pistol #5 and Pistol #6 when I found it for cheep at Gun Shows. They were good medium load powders for pistol cartridges. I banged up a lot of both in .32-20 revolvers. It burned very clean; much less unburned gunk than Unique or 2400.

DuPont 5066 was supposed to have been a combination of the best qualities of both #5 and #6. Used to be a lot of old stocks of that around too, and I loaded lots of it. Got the load data for all three from Sharpe’s book IIRC. There didn’t seem to be much difference in charge weight or performance in any of the three powders, at least in the cartridges I loaded.

I think I still have a half can of #5 left. At gun shows I see the empty cans for all three going as “collectibles.” How time flies!

Was just looking at an old Lyman manual, gotta be late 50's though I couldn't find a copyright date. It has data for 5066 for most pistol calibers that were around then.
