    Mold design

After taking RCBS 458 cal 405's down to 451 dia, patching and sticken em in one hole all day(Thankyou P Patch) I think I'll order a real mold from dan at mountain. Just wondering how best to design for 45'70 a mold so that the boolit produced has a fine radial line so as to guide paper identical each time?

I prefer the Lyman 451114. It drops at .4515, 432gr and is ready to patch. I patch just forward of the front driving band. My patches are rolled on a 8 x 8 hard rubber pad. I have a groove cut in one end 1/2" in from the end to hold the bullet square and an aliment line to line the patch up square with the bullet. A line on the pad gives me a reference for the nose of the bullet.

If you want that radial line cast in you can just select the "Bore Riding Tangential Ogive" option. Then play with the bore riding diameter vs. the shank diameter to get what you want.

I suppose 0.001" or 0.002" would give you enough of a line to be visible, but not so much as to make a huge performance difference.

OR, you can mark the line by putting a roll crimp on an empty case. Stick the boolit in the case nose first and turn it. The case should have made a "score" on the boolit's nose. Adjust the amount of crimp to get your desired patching reference.

Do you plan to have a full compliment of grease grooves...or smooth sides?

If you want a good shooting PP bullet and mould get the .442 or the .444 and patch it to bore diameter.
You wont find a combination much better.

Thats ok for black powder, for smokeless you need to size to bore diameter + .001/.0015 and patch to groove diameter or large enough to fill the throat.

Using smokeless powder with a PP bullet never came into my mind.
Why would you want to do that?

How about performance equal to or better than jacketed bullets? With no leading and super easy bore cleaning!

At the risk of sounding dense, if you are already sticking them all in one hole all day just how do you plan to measure an improvement over what you have. Expecting Dan to build you something that will beat that is giving him a pretty tall order.

I love the design of those boolitts also. Problem is, in my Smelly, they won't pattern as well as lube groove designs sized way down.
I bet you are going to get a great mold, but, I bet the other one wins out long run.
The Lee Push Thru Sizer die makes real smooth sides. All sized the same also.

It all depends on which bench you prefer to spend your time at.

One reason for getting a mold would be that you can have a mold that casts them to .451" Then you don't need to size 'em.

    Lyman 451114 works perfect!
