    bought 'nother mauser

i bought a sporterized Brazilian model 1908 in 7 mauser(i'll check on that). its serial # is B 74** SS. i paid around 2 Ben Franklin's for it. halfway up the barrel, i can see pits(1 - 1 1/2" wide) but not enuff to fret about. the barrel seems clean and sharp and the trigger pulls around 8 - 10 lbs(2 stage) cleanly. i still have to clean it and i'll probably sand, wood filler, sand somemore and minwax antique oil the stock. i'm on the fence for d&t for scope mounts, i like the crest. the trigger has to go, i'll probably replace it with a dayton or timney.

i have too many rifle projects to do. i guess she has to go into safe and take a number.

They're good rifles, and the 7x57mm cartridge is a good cartridge.

I have a VZ which started the same way. I cleaned it then shot it to check function. It has progressed to a barreled action with a Lyman peep site. All it needs now is a trigger, re-chamber to 8mm-06 and a new stock. I think this one has been dragging along on my “list” for 15 years or so.

If it has a nice crest on it I personally would not drill and tap and destroy the crest. But that is just me talking. I might drill and tap and put a rear receiver sight on it that would not destroy the crest. Would not have to alter the bolt either. my .02 and not worth much, james

if i could find one, i'd go with b square rear sight base for an IER scope. then there is no d&t to mess up the crest.

I like the route you are taking in making a scout rifle design. Let us know how it works for you when you get to the range with it. james

A nice rifle and a great cartridge too! One of the all time best do-it-all calibers in my opinion, and another one is would be the 257 Roberts.
Soft shooting, and an outstanding killer on white tail. Also like the Roberts, a wonderful woman's gun, due to soft recoil.
My brother is a huge fan, of the 7 x 57, but made the mistake of shooting a bullet too heavy the first year out. Lost the deer, and not because of a bad hit, as he an experienced hunter, and a good marksman.
They found the deer later, after the coyotes had got into it. It was shot right where it should have been hit, the problem was, the bullet never expanded. Probably would have been fine in a 7 mag, but too slow for the 7x57.
He is using a lighter bullet 130- 140 ish.. and running it pretty hot, not stupid hot, but up near the top. Kills like a bolt of lightning. Like the saying goes.. Speed Kills..

i used to have a custom 98 mauser(FN) in 7x57(20" douglas sporter barrel) and 139gr hornady fn with imr3031 or imr4350. i'm guessing it was going 2600-2700fps+/-. i killed alot of deer with it. now its my oldest son's rifle and he sure does kill deer with it.
