    Young man hunting our woods

Mrs. Thumbcocker and I are VERY particular about who has access to our land. Thus young man is the son of a person who works in the building we used to work in.

He is not a typical kid. He is 15, very respectful, mature for his age, and very responsible. Only he and his father have permission to be on our land. When ha asked for permission to hunt he offered to pay us. We refused. A compromise was reached. He and his father helped us move a tractor and other equipment across the county and he gets to hunt.

The boy put in his time and paid his dues by scouting and roosting the birds. Today it all came together for him. This is the second weekend of the Illinois youth turkey season. He did all the calling himself. Not bad for someone who doesn't have a driver's license yet.

Very nice. Congratulations to him for a successful hunt; but even more so congratulations to you for allowing and helping to make it happen.

That's awesome, Thumbcocker! Looks like the lad is off to a great start!

Nice, young man learns that sometimes an offer to help is more valuable then money. I got permission to hunt many time by helping build fence in the spring and summer or other chores during the summer. Even drove a beet truck one fall. It ended up building a friendship with many of the families that gave us permission.

It shows that his parents have been raising him the right way. Its too bad that that seems to happen too few times today.

Good news! That’s what we are in short supply of!

I give a number of people permission to hunt/fish, whatever and I do not expect anything from them except that they obey whatever rules we insist upon.

That said: While I do not favor monetary compensation either, I do think the OP’s compensatory method is golden and the reason is that the people who make the sacrifice in trade to gain access have a vested interest. They will not take their opportunity for granted. AND when they score as this young teen has, they will relish the experience even more.

    Well done Thumbcocker, well done!

That is a good photo of a young man being helped along the road in a fine way.
