50-90 with 1:28 Twist

Anyone have a 50-90 with 1:28 twist? Looking to see what weight range will work with this twist. Currently using a RCBS 50-515 that works well. Have shot Lyman 515141 that didn't work that well. Wondering if something in the 600 range would work with this twist or if it's too slow for that big and heavy.

That bullet shoots well in my 1-26” c. Sharps 50-90. I have not shot a grease groove bullet that weighs 600 grains however I do shoot a PP bullet that weighs 600 grains and it shoots pretty good.

I think you have more than enough twist for a 600grain bullet. Badger barrels made their 50 a 1-26 twist and it supports bullets to 700 grains +.
The old 50-70 Govt. was something like 1 in 36" and used 450 grain bullets.
I think you are on very safe ground to have full stability with the combo. of 600grs in a 1 in 28 twist.

Alright thanks for the input, I kind of thought it would be ok, but was thinking of a BACO mold so didn't want to drop 200 for something that was a lost cause.

I just bought a Pedersoli 1874 50/90 with a 1:26 twist from a fella its shooting 650gr well he said he tried some 505gr bullets that we're all over the place, I haven't tried them myself though I have a fella going to send me some 550gr bullets to try in it.

I have a couple rifles I'm building around the GM 1:24 twist (WS502436ST) in 50-90 and the twist has been more than adequate for the 625g Baco or JIM512625C mold. I've pushed a 795g pill from a NEI mold with no issues except for what's felt on the other end. For a 1000 yds with the 625g I've found there is a preference for a little harder lead, 16:1 tightened my group size a little but it may have been the shooter and his mind set too. I shot quite a bit using the 515 in my first few times out. At 200 yards it looked to be a good candidate but when I went to 800 yards I was having better results with my 45's - not what I hoped for going to the Big 50. This first one is built around a '74 and I my intention is to be my mile gun, so far this is showing promise to 1400 yards as time and weather hasn't let me shoot it beyond that - that 400 more yards is significant.
The 28 twist should be a good fit for the 600 plus and if GM had cut their barrels in that - I'd went there without any concerns. Good luck and post your findings.

Sounds like an interesting project. It'd be cool to hear your results getting out past 1400. Don't know how you can see that far!! Thanks for the info regarding the bullets.

And for a fun plinker / yote load try a 350 grain. Keeps you out shooting and will get your hunting skills finely honed. A 350 40-1 FN smacking a yote at any range puts them down usually in one piece.

To paper patch off the shelf fifty caliber rifle molds; went with 28" twist in a percussion rifle with 38" long barrel. Still finding out what it likes. Now retired I'm looking forwards to more bench time this year.
