lyman peep sight for rem m14, fail

i got a remington m14 in 30 rem last year. it has the original sights but my eyes don't do "buckhorns". they will do peep sights. so i set off on my quest to find the peeps. i put in "tang sights for remington model 14". the tang sight goes for $100 - $350 and up. my mouth fell open and i'm sure it was me, but there was a "ack...uhhhhhh...ack" sound. my hopes were dashed at the price tag. i could go $100-$120 with the screws, but i'll be danged to pay $130 or more, danged i tell ya!!!!!

months go by, but i was still looking for m14 peep(tang) sights/screws. then three weeks ago, i found them at an auction. the bid started low($25) and two guys had to have it. when it got to $110 a guy dropped out and the other guy knew he had them, BUT............i already decided on $120 so what the heck, i bid on the tang sight and won.

then i had a really bad head cold and when that went away, then it was my lower back turn. when that was all done, it was the rem m14 turn!!! it was a easy-peasy job, take off two screws, put the tang sight on and replace the screws........so i thought. i thought wrong. the taking off of the screws is what got me. boy they TIGHT!!!!!! well, it's time to use a little kroil action on them, but first i've to dissemble the rifle. (all it takes is a thumbscrew to take off the stock and the action) i look at the screws and i can see top and bottom of the screws. so i take the kroil to the top of screws and let it soak overnite. the next day, i take the screwdriver to them and the screws are still tight. no big deal, i turn the stock over and the two holes(of the screws) are filled up with kroil and i let them soak overnite again. the next day, i fill up the two holes with kroil and almost instantly the kroil goes thru the screwholes and drips on my rag. so i turn over the stock and begin to screw them out. the first screw was tight but after a little more pressure on my wrist, it "pops" out. i take screwdriver to last screw and after a little more pressure of my wrist, the screw breaks its head!!!!! "AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!" i say(well not really, family channel and all). i would drill it out and take an easy-out tool to deal with it, but i don't want to do it with only arm(the left one). i'm scared of drilling into the threads of the screw(its tiny), so i will take it to my gunsmith to do it.

sometimes, my stroke is a pain in the butt!!!!!

I feel your pain. We get bit from time to time. Good plan to let the smith remove the screw. Hopefully, he is not a friend.

i have been a machinist toolmaker for 40+ years. It is about a 40% chance I'll be successful drilling out a screw. I've got a mill too!

There is one thing I do that seems to work well, and that is holding my mouth a certain way. Can't really tell you what that way is,,, as it seems to change from day to day.

    But that's what I do.

    I have a saying I spread around.

It's not how well you do what you know how to do. It's how well you do what you DON'T know how to do.

    Seems to cover this subject.

i went to my gunsmith to pick up my husky m46(he made it cock on open with dayton kit). note: you have cut the firing pin to make the swede werk!!! i gave the rem m14 with a broken screw and peep sights with the parts. "i've done this just about 2 or 3 days ago. except is was a 32 rem. it will take about 5 minutes, i'll do it now." he says. an 1 hour later the rem peep sight was put on. i don't how how he remained calm but he did it. he got the broken screw out by using(repeatedly) a small drill bit and small extractor and a small brass hammer and a torch. the screw threads were just fine too. if it were me, about 15 minutes in i'd drill and tap it in a bigger size screw hole(i'd be laughing evilly too)!!!

when it was done, i asked "what was the damage?" he goes $20 and i handed him $40 and i said, "you deserve it."

oh, i handed a 93 mauser and a numrich 6.5x55 barrel to screwed on and blued.

Hint: The screws in the rifle are plug screws to fill the holes and not the mounting screws. They are too short to mount the sight. You stripped out the top couple of threads and in trying to cinch them down and twisted off the head. Not the first person to do this. I have drilled out more than one boogered screw and the threads can always be chased with a proper tap. Not really a big deal.

The sight originally came with two mounting screws. They are standard 6-48 gun screws and are easy to find, but may have to be shortened to not bottom out and provide a firm mount for the sight.

i know that plug screws are too short. i bought the mounting screws and peep sight as one. the problem was the "plug"(mounting) screw was broken off (about 1/2 way). that was before the gunsmith mounted the peep sight. i have also drilled screws and bolts and extracted them. some didn't need a tap, some did.

being one handed and in a small small hole, i was afraid of drilling the screw out and hitting the threads when i wasn't supposed to. when i broke the screw off, i was lucky enuff to stop messing with it. the broken screw was left to my gunsmith. he did chase the threads out by using a plug (mounting) screw.

I bought a Model 14 not to long ago. It came with that Lyman peep on it. I can't figure out how too keep the adjusting nut in place after I set my elevation. Are there two nuts working together?

When screws and bolts get stuck you can use a soldering iron tip or small butane torch to heat them. Slightly tightening, then loosening, will usually break free the threads without damage, especially if you are dealing with corrosion or overtorque... An oil or water dampened rag can function as a heat sink to protect the surface finish, a lil touch will do.

    (Related but off topic)
For the really messy, like for example, when the water pump bolts that thread into an aluminum timing cover snap off (I'm looking at you 09 jeep wrangler 3.8 v6!!) weld a small nut to the exposed stud, apply more heat carefully, then bump it with an impact tool and socket.

I hate drilling out bolts where a screw up puts a hole in the water jacket. Thankfully I have never scewed up like that.

You never know who worked on it before you. They might have tightened it until it loosened, then backed it off 1/4 turn .
